Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas criminal law, family law and every day civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 28 offices.



The Aboriginal Women on Remand Pilot

Legal aid is committed to closing the Gap of the over representation of Aboriginal women within the remand population.

The Aboriginal Women on Remand Pilot aims to triage clients to expedite release applications in the Supreme Court. The team will work through clients’ applications in the courts and where possible will focus on providing support by gaining an in-depth knowledge of individuals situations. After consultation with each client, bespoke advice will be provided to each client, outlining the most appropriate course of action to take. Supporting documents will be managed sensitively, considerations will include collating evidence to support primary health, mental health, drug and ******* rehabilitation, employment, education, housing, relationships, and financial counselling. The Pilot also makes referrals to Civil and Family law to ensure clients are assisted across the spectrum of their legal issues.


About the role

You will provide case management to female Aboriginal clients on remand who have complex social and legal needs. These clients are referred to the Aboriginal Women on Remand Pilot (AWRP) via applications for Supreme Court bail to the ICLC Supreme Court Bails team.

Please Note: Legal Aid NSW considers that being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1+77 (NSW).

Applicants for this role must satisfy the Aboriginality criteria. Aboriginality is defined by descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. In the pre-screening questions you will need to provide information on how you satisfy the Aboriginality criteria.


About you

We are looking for a committed Case Worker for our offices at Sydney Metro area, to:

provide case management to Aboriginal women Defendants (and their families) on remand impacted by various matters such as domestic and family violence with complex social and legal needs including referral assistance, risk assessment, safety planning, support in attending Court as well as other services.
Interview defendants via Audio Link (mainly) and collect relevant documents related to each case and provide clinical expertise to address the socio-legal needs of Aboriginal women in remand where your focus will be working towards closing the gap targets for women by assisting in the preparation of appropriate Supreme Court Bail applications.

The essential requirements for this role

You must:

be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and Working with Children Check
have 3 years minimum relevant experience
have Diploma Level 5 and above (minimum 2 years study)
