The College of Arts and Sciences has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Academic Services.

The University of Washington's College of Arts & Sciences is seeking a dynamic and innovative Director of Academic Services to join our team. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our academic programs and driving student success in the Division of the Arts. This position offers a unique blend of operational oversight, strategic planning, data analysis, systems-building, and collaborative leadership with a team of dedicated academic services professionals.

The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest academic unit in the University. The Arts Division’s mission is to inspire students, faculty, and the greater community to seek knowledge and meaning through artistic experience. Arts faculty, with the active participation of graduate and undergraduate students, continuously expand the frontiers of knowledge through their creative productions and scholarly research. Rooted in the liberal arts student experience, the College prepares arts students to become leaders in an increasingly diverse and complex society. The Arts Division includes five academic units: the School of Art, Art History & Design, the School of Drama, the School of Music, the Department of Dance, and Digital Arts & Experimental Media (DXARTS).

The Director of Academic Services reports to the Senior Director of Academic Services.

Role and responsibilities include:

Academic Program Operations and Curriculum Management (40%)

Conduct ongoing holistic evaluation of all aspects of each of the academic programs, including enrollment management practices, course offerings, curriculum revisions, recruiting/admissions, and continuation policies.

Partner with internal and cross-functional teams to achieve key performance indicators for student outcomes and enrollment trends.

Collaborate with faculty and other campus units to ensure curricular excellence, an inclusive and compelling student learning experience, and a positive and cohesive teaching environment for faculty.

Act as the departments’ initial contact for student academic misconduct cases, grade appeals as well as student complaints and concerns about their programs and/or courses.

Recommend and implement new initiatives, services, and degree programs.

Monitor and report to the faculty leadership on student satisfaction with and progress in the academic experience. Recommend action in response to feedback received.

Act as a key administrative representative of the represented departments to faculty and staff (tri-campus), as well as to the public.

Oversee the management of websites related to academics and student activities.

Strategic Operations Management (30%)

In conjunction with chairs and directors, plan, manage and oversee the comprehensive academic programs for the portfolio of departments.

Develop strategies, goals and policies in alignment with the mission and values of the departments, College and institution.

Establish multi-year plans to maintain and expand program excellence, enhance the student experience and ensure program relevancy.

Serve on committees both internal and external at the college or university-level.

Develop, implement and oversee guidelines and policies relating to each of the represented programs.

Collaborate with campus partners around first-year student and transfer student orientations, enrollment management planning for service courses and transfer course evaluations.

Supervision (30%)

Lead, coach, develop, mentor, and supervise the student services office staff, which may include advising staff, classified staff, hourly and ASE student employees. Includes knowledge of each staff type, University policies and union contract rules.

Organize professional development plans for full-time staff with goals and objectives for staff growth.

Develop, implement and conduct continuous review of effective operating policies, procedures and systems for staff.

Hire staff, evaluate job performance, and take corrective action if performance is not acceptable.

Assign tasks to and oversee work done by all staff, student and temporary employees.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree and at least four years of student services experience in an academic setting.

Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirements.

Desired Qualifications:

Master's degree preferred but can substitute degree requirement for bachelor's degree and demonstrated supervisory experience in an a related academic or student services setting.

Experience working with faculty, department and college leadership.

Supervisory experience, including hiring, leading a team, providing coaching and feedback, and implementing corrective action when needed.

Understanding of the student experience and the educational mission of a research-intensive public institution.

Experience in overseeing complex projects, evaluation and oversight of risk management, report production, and maintaining stabilization during transition periods.

Excellent problem-solving and administrative skills.

Previous experience working with curricula at a college-level academic program.

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to independently manage multiple responsibilities under pressure and remain highly adaptable to changing priorities.

$84,000.00 annual
