Te Paetahi Akoranga – Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) is a Tiriti-informed initial teacher education programme that prepares ākonga to become skilled, reflective, and culturally grounded early childhood kaiako. Rooted in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and informed by both te ao Māori and te ao Pākehā, the programme emphasises ako (reciprocal learning), whanaungatanga (relationships), and manaakitanga (care).

Through a combination of academic study and professional practice, ākonga engage deeply with the theory and practice of ECE. The programme encourages critical reflection, collaborative learning, and strong connections with whānau, hapū, iwi, and the wider ECE community. Graduates leave not only as qualified teachers, but as committed advocates for tamariki, equity, and culturally responsive teaching in Aotearoa.

As an Academic Staff Member, you will work as part of a collaborative and positive teaching team, sharing responsibility for planning, facilitation, assessment, and learner support. Teaching is relational and collective in this programme, and the ability to work closely with colleagues is essential.

The role includes:

Co-planning and co-teaching within a Tiriti-informed Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) programme
Modelling fluent, accurate, and contextually appropriate use of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori across teaching and professional contexts
Supporting and mentoring adult learners through collaborative, dialogic teaching approaches
Visiting ākonga in ECE settings and contributing to shared practicum supervision
Participating in noho marae and kaupapa Māori learning contexts as a teaching team
Engaging in shared reflection, scholarship, and ongoing programme development

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Fluency in te reo Māori, with confidence using te reo across teaching, professional, and relational contexts
A deep, lived understanding of te ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and Tiriti o Waitangi obligations within education
Strong pedagogical knowledge, including the ability to articulate why and how teaching decisions are made
Experience working in collaborative or co-teaching environments, including shared planning and assessment
Experience supporting adult learners and developing future teachers
Understanding of culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy, including second-language acquisition
A reflective, research-informed approach to teaching practice
You will also:

Hold a current Full Practising Certificate (NZ Teaching Council – ECE, Primary, or Secondary)
Hold, or be actively working towards, a Master’s degree
Be actively engaged in professional learning and/or research
Be a generous, relational, and dependable team member
Hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence
