Under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Financial Officer, the purpose of this position is to perform, monitor, approve, and review routine to complex accounting work according to generally accepted standard accounting principles, established procedures, departmental guidelines, and regulatory requirements applicable to the work

Examples of Duties

Plans, reviews, and performs the work of recording accounting transactions, maintaining the reconciling journals, ledgers, and other record books. Prepares various reports, forms, and statements

Prepares month-end and year-end accounting activities such as reconciliations, journal entries, etc.

Prepare monthly taxes including fuel tax and Sales and Use Taxes

Assist with the preparation of annual Unclaimed Property for reporting to the State

Assist with the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report

Provide responsible, professional, and technical assistance, as assigned, in the accounts receivable process including preparation of bank deposits, cash flow sheets, and entries to post revenues to the general ledger

Provide assistance to other departments when requests for information pertaining to checks, purchase orders, deposits, or credit card transactions are received

Provide technical assistance with the budget preparation process as needed, including accumulating historical data and researching future projections

Provide technical assistance to city departments with administration of the budget

Provide technical assistance as needed in monitoring the City's budget through producing and reviewing reports to identify abnormalities

Prepare, analyze, and distribute financial and statistical budget reports for various city departments

Participate in and assume responsibility as needed in the preparation for the City's external audit, including preparing reports, pulling documents for review, etc.

Assume responsibility for reviewing documents year-round for compliance with internal financial policies

Participate in and assume responsibility for tracking of fixed assets

All other tasks as assigned

Typical Qualifications

Valid driver's license

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent combination of education and work experience

At least three (3) years' experience in budget, accounting, business, preferable in a governmental environment; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience

Working knowledge of accounting principles

Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Ability to handle multitasking and stressful situations

Ability to meet deadlines and work well under time constraints

Knowledge of municipal budgeting practices and principles
