The Anime Model Kit Mechanic role involves the assembly, maintenance, modification, and restoration of anime models (such as Gundam, figurines, and GK models), ensuring structural stability, detailed appearance, and meeting the requirements of clients seeking display, collection, commercialization, or custom orders. This position combines an understanding of mechanical structures, handcrafting skills, painting, and surface treatment, and is suitable for professionals skilled in precision work and possessing an aesthetic sensibility.
Main Responsibilities
I. Model Assembly and Structural Treatment
Disassemble, repair, and assemble model parts according to instructions or customer requirements.
Perform interlocking adjustments, structural reinforcement, and joint optimization (e.g., anti-loosening, extension, joint replacement).
Use sanding, trimming, and puttying techniques to correct part defects.
Perform test assembly to ensure overall structural stability and smooth movement.
II. Exterior Painting and Surface Treatment
Paint, mask, gradient painting, and detail outlining according to design plans.
Use airbrushes, spray guns, paints, and clear coats for professional-grade surface treatment.
Perform stylized treatments such as weathering, metallic finishes, and lighting effects.
Clean, dustproof, and anti-oxidation protection for models.
III. Model Repair and Maintenance
Repair common model problems such as breakage, discoloration, paint peeling, and loose joints.
Troubleshooting issues such as aging plastic and resin parts, deformation, and yellowing.
Regularly maintain and assess the condition of showroom or customer collections.
IV. Modification and Customization (Kitbashing / Custom) Modeling
Design and manufacture custom parts or replacements
Execute advanced customization services such as kitbash (assembly and modification), structural remodeling, and color redesign
Collaborate with designers to create limited edition or display models
V. Exhibition or Client Project Support
Create display-grade finished products for exhibitions, shops, museums, or showrooms
Adjust model poses, joint stability, and lighting reflection according to the needs of the photography team
Record the production process, modification plans, materials, and color codes
Job Requirements
Familiar with model making processes, including assembly, sanding, painting, and detail finishing
Proficient in using common tools: carving knives, sanding sticks, putty, airbrush/airgun, tweezers, etc.
Understand basic mechanical structures, joint connection principles, and the properties of plastic/resin materials
Good color perception and aesthetic judgment
Patient, with high finesse, and attention to detail
Knowledge of safe handling of chemical materials (paints, cleaning solutions, resins)
Bonus Points (Optional)
Experience or portfolio in Gundam, GK models, or figure making
Familiar with 3D-to-2D rendering, character concept art, and IP Designer experience is a plus.
Proficient in using 3D modeling tools (such as ZBrush/Blender/Fusion 360) to create replacement parts.
Familiar with 3D printing equipment and post-processing.
Experience in model studios, toy companies, or model showrooms is preferred.
