Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a motivated, best-in-class Applied Scientist for the Internet Controllers team in Sydney, Australia. This team works at the Internet edge of the AWS global network, connecting Amazon services to the Internet via external peering and transit connectivity.
The Networking & Infrastructure teams at AWS are building software to simplify the internet and control traffic, automate network remediation and deployment, improve performance for customers, answer queries about the safety of network actions and automatically detect anomalies using scientific intelligence, and roll out new software to the fleet of network devices with minimum human interaction.
In this role, you’ll develop software that’s removing the need for human intervention by performing millions of daily operations across a multitude of regions across the globe. You’ll join a team that’s instrumental in driving the stability and sustainability of our next-generation networks and discovering innovative ways to automate and scale services as we continue to expand.
Join our dynamic team of software engineers, network engineers, and applied scientists as we tackle complex traffic optimization challenges at global scale. You'll be at the forefront of developing next-generation internet controllers and AI-powered tooling, combining machine learning with real-world network engineering problems.
Key job responsibilities
An Applied Scientist on the team is expected to guide Network software and operations teams on building novel systems, theory and statistical/ML/AI models to solve complex network challenges that couldn't be solved with traditional approaches alone. You will be responsible for ideating, creating research prototypes, delivering projects in production, and interact with cross-functional teams to understand their needs and build novel systems or theoretical solutions to advance network performance, reliability, and automation. Our team operates across four strategic pillars:
Network Behavior Analysis: Investigating complex network dynamics, emergent behaviors, routing oscillations, and performance bottlenecks
Models, Algorithms & System Design: Developing innovative routing algorithms, traffic optimization models, and performance enhancement techniques
Evaluation & Metrics: Building comprehensive measurement systems for end-to-end performance metrics and cross-domain evaluation frameworks
Technology Integration & Application: Leveraging emerging technologies including Gen-AI to solve complex network challenges

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
3+ years of building models for business application experience
Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in professional software development
PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience
Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
