The Workshop and Engineering section has recently undergone a significant reshaping and we are now looking to recruit to a number of key roles across the team to secure long term success.

As Apprentice Workshop Technician you’ll thrive on being part of a team of highly skilled workshop technicians and fitter. The successful applicant will join a team striving to deliver the maintenance of the Green Spaces fleet. This will ensure the council’s statutory duties are upheld and we are able to provide safe, well-maintained spaces for all to enjoy. About You

As an Apprentice Workshop Technician you will:
• Be able undertake training and development activities as required from appointed by our learning providers and existing staff.
• Have attained a minimum of GCSE Level 4/C in Maths and English.
• Attend Askham Bryan College, York.
• Have the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
• Have an ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
• Have a high degree of manual dexterity.

About The Role

Our Transport and Engineering section are seeking to appoint an Apprentice Workshop Technician, to be part of a team based at The Arium in LS14, but may also be asked to work anywhere within the city boundary.

The successful candidate will be required to attend Askham Bryan College in York and undertake a Level 2 Land Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship. The duration of this is 20 months with 22 one-week blocks spread across the academic calendar. There will also be additional internal training and development opportunities to bolster your learning.

What you will learn:
• Health and safety in the workplace.
• Machine inspection, simple fault diagnosis.
• Engine technology incorporating lubrication systems.
• Intake and exhaust systems, cooling systems.
• Electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Practices including removing and replacing components.

In line with this training, you will gain knowledge from the workshop team on the techniques used to maintain, service, and repair of a diverse range of horticultural, agricultural, arboricultural machinery plant and equipment used within Leeds City Council’s greenspaces.

Job purpose

To undertake a course of learning to develop skill and knowledge on how to inspect, service, repair and maintain Agricultural, Horticultural, Arboriculture and related plant and machinery in

accordance with statutory regulations and Council policy.

Responsibilities
• To undertake training and development activities as required from appointed learning providers and existing workshop staff to enable effective development of skill and knowledge to meet the requirements of a recognised apprenticeship programme.
• To complete all assignments and maintain a student portfolio, as required by a work-based apprenticeship.
• To gain skills and knowledge in accurate fault diagnosis, repair and defects reporting of Agricultural, Horticultural, Arboriculture and related plant and machinery.
• To become conversant and skilled in the use of specialist powered and hand tools used for the maintenance of horticultural, agricultural and arboricultural machinery.
• Flexible and adaptable to change to assist other services as required commensurate to grade.
• Participate in appraisal, training and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.
• Improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and development programmes.
• To work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
• Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.
• Be aware of and comply with Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g. child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
• Be aware of and support difference and ensure equality for all working in an anti-discriminatory manner, upholding and promoting the values, standards and equal opportunities of Leeds City Council.
• Recognise and appropriately challenge any incidents of racism, bullying, harassment or victimisation and any form of abuse of equal opportunities, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
• The Council has adopted a flexibility protocol and this role will be expected to work within these parameters.

Qualifications
• A minimum entry requirement of a GCSE level 4/C in Maths and English.
