What is the role?
Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates wishing to be considered for multiple technical roles within the National Armoury, Australian Federal Police. These positions are based in Canberra, and Perth and attract an operational composite of 22%. Travel is required to other states and territories to conduct firearm servicing activities.

This recruitment round covers the following positions:

Deputy Armoury Registrar, Gunsmith, Band 6
Senior Armourer, Band 5
Armourer Band, 3-4

As a Team Member in the AFP, you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?
The role of the Deputy Armoury Registrar, Gunsmith is to support the Team Leader of the National Armoury in both decision-making and daily operations. Working collaboratively with the Team Leader, this position is responsible for prioritising workflow and offering guidance as a subject matter expert on firearms and related equipment.

The Senior Armourer plays an important technical role in armoury operations. This includes supervising Armourers, conducting advanced fault diagnostics, managing weapons maintenance schedules, and ensuring full compliance with all applicable safety and operational standards.

The Armourer is responsible for the safe handling, technical inspection, maintenance, and accountability of firearms and accessories. Working under the supervision of the Senior Armourer and Gunsmith, this role ensures all weapons and equipment are maintained in a serviceable condition, meet regulatory compliance standards, and are ready for operational deployment.

Essential Requirements
Although specific requirements differ depending on the position, as per candidate pack, the following criteria are considered fundamental:

You must be an Australian citizen at time of application.
A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Certificate III (or equivalent) in a recognised mechanical trade field.
Ability to complete required internal and external courses.
Sound mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
Commitment to safety and procedural compliance.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable Requirements
Desirable requirements vary between roles, however as a baseline, the following is highly regarded:

Certified in Engineering (Mechanical) Cert III, Fitter and Machinist is highly desirable.
Relevant and contemporary Armoury related knowledge and experience.
Proven ability of using subject matter expertise within the Armoury field.
Previous logistical experience.

These roles are located in Canberra and Perth; applicants are expected to be based in Canberra or Perth. Any relocation will be at the applicant's cost.
This advertisement is to create a merit list for future ongoing or non-ongoing vacancies arising over the next 12 months.
This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
