Skills Required
The AS/400 Systems Engineer demonstrates technical expertise in the administration, performance, and support of the IBM i platform, including: System Administration & Architecture: Strong understanding of IBM i architecture, object-based file system, and core system components Proficiency with CL (Control Language) commands and scripting for automation and operations Experience with system navigation tools including command line, Navigator for i, and Access Client Solutions (ACS) Administration of system configurations, libraries, subsystems, job scheduling, and device descriptions System Monitoring & Performance: Experience with system monitoring tools and operational alerting Ability to analyze and manage CPU, memory utilization, and job queue performance Performance tuning and capacity management to ensure system efficiency and reliability Backup, Recovery & Availability: Administration of backup and recovery processes, including scheduling and media management (tape and virtual) Knowledge of disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution Familiarity with high availability (HA) and business continuity solutions Platform Maintenance & Integration: Management of system upgrades, PTFs, and ongoing maintenance DB2 for i database administration, including performance tuning and data integrity Support for network connectivity, interfaces, and integration with external and modern platforms (APIs, data exchange) Development & Application Support: Working knowledge of RPG (RPGLE / Free RPG), CL programming, and SQL Ability to develop and maintain utility programs, scripts, and minor application enhancements Experience with code debugging, job analysis, and performance optimization of existing applications Support for data integration and interface development between IBM i and external systems Professional Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities Effective communication skills, both written and verbal Ability to work collaboratively across technical and business teams Demonstrated ownership and accountability in a production support environment
Experience Required
At minimum, three years' experience within the last seven years conducting day-to-day server, system and security administration of an IBM AS/400 platform, preferably at the Version 7, R3 level or higher. Three years’ experience with developing, coding, testing and implementing programs specifically for the AS/400, or which can transfer data into existing or newly developed systems. Three years' experience with Power 8 to EMC Dell VNX storage connectivity for disaster recovery backups.
