The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Assistant Commissioner, Workforce and Custodial Operations to provide a critical role within Corrections Victoria.

About the Business Unit

Corrections Victoria's vision is for Safer Prisons, Safer People and Safer Communities. Our mission is to create a safer, smarter corrections system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions.

Corrections Victoria operates Victoria's adult prison system, seeking to provide safe and secure containment for people in our care and an environment and programs and services that support rehabilitation. Corrections Victoria runs 10 public prisons, one transition centre, and oversees three privately operated prisons. Corrections Victoria aims to contribute to community safety by providing best practice interventions that aim to reduce the risk of reoffending, including case management informed by sound risk assessment, offence specific and offence related programs, and transition and reintegration supports.

About the Role

This is a new role arising from a recommendation of the Cultural Review of the Adult Custodial Corrections System to enhance the operational leadership to support the workforce and embed cultural reform.

As a key member of the Corrections Victoria executive, the Assistant Commissioner Workforce and Custodial Operations will support the strategic direction, management and operation of the adult custodial system, with an emphasis on workforce reforms. The role will work within Corrections Victoria and across the broader Department of Justice and Community Safety, in particular working closely with the department's People, Safety, Culture and Communications Group on all people related matters.

Some of your duties will include:

Contribute to shaping Corrections Victoria's culture as a member of the Corrections Victoria leadership team, including supporting ongoing cultural reform across the prison system and the achievement of the vision for Safer Prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities.
Support Prison General Manager's to lead and manage the operational performance of prisons, including working closely with corporate staff on human resources, finance, health and safety and industrial issues.
Provide technical expertise, advice and leadership in the delivery of custodial operations, including the delivery of quality outcomes and the development and negotiation of significant prison innovation and reform.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Recognised knowledge, specialist expertise and a record of achievement at a state-wide or national level in developing and implementing a reform agenda in a complex operational environment.
A proven record and high-level skills in working within government and with a diverse group of stakeholders on complex cultural and workforce issues and the ability to develop innovative programs and responses to provide a sound basis for best practice custodial services in Victoria.
Demonstrated people leadership and stakeholder engagement skills preferably in a uniformed context and/or complex operational environment.
