As Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide strategic and legal advice to all parts of the NAB Group on commercial contracts and projects, including strategic relationships, procurement and customer contracts, as well as providing general corporate legal advice on a broad range of areas.

Each day, you’ll go above and beyond to:

Provide legal advice on strategic commercial contracts and projects aligned with NAB’s strategy, including working as part of the project team as required
Develop deep relationships with key business teams at NAB and focus on their “must win” battles
Review, draft and negotiate contracts relating to commercial transactions, including the procurement of goods and services that can include the outsourcing of services
Provide strategic legal advice in relation to interpretation of contracts and disputes, regulatory change and internal policies, as well as on a broad range of different subject areas
Proactively identify legal, regulatory and reputational risks to the business and work with the business to find solutions
Identify opportunities, and develop solutions, for streamlining processes in the Commercial Legal team to ensure NAB is simple, fast, resilient and more customer focused, whilst meeting legal and regulatory requirements
Engage, monitor and supervise external legal advisers, manage external and internal legal adviser relationships, and facilitate communication between external legal advisers with internal NAB stakeholders
Be a role model, demonstrate NAB’s Service Behaviours and bring a customer-centric approach to your work

You are an experienced lawyer who thrives on legal excellence and professionalism in actively managing legal risk in line with commercial and strategic priorities.

Bachelor of Laws qualification and admission to legal practice in Australia
7+ years Post qualification experience (PQE) as a lawyer at a legal firm or in-house experience
Prior experience providing corporate / commercial legal advice and negotiating and advising on contracts, M&A or similar corporate experience
Outstanding communication (verbal and written) skills with the ability to engage, influence and facilitate effective conversations with stakeholders at all levels
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with a collaborative and partnering approach focusing on providing high quality, timely and cost-effective legal advice and assistance to enable commercial decision-making which allows the business achieve their objectives
Experience with advising on financial products and financial regulation would also be beneficial, but is not essential
Adaptable, willing to learn and comfortable operating in new and grey legal areas
Excellent organisational skills, including prioritisation and time management

Support, guide and train junior lawyers in the APAC region. What We’re Looking For Qualified solicitor (common law jurisdiction), with 10+ years’ experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house team. Previous experience in the professional services industry preferred, although not essential. Experience in reviewing and negotiating commercial arrangements, including with Australian government organisations, banks and/ or Asia Pacific multi-nationals. Demonstrated ability to resolve complex legal issues and to deliver creative, business-friendly, and cost-effective solutions with an appropriate sense of urgency. High performer who thrives in a challenging and often unpredictable business environment. Strong team player with a collaborative approach and a commitment to delivering high-quality results. Ability to exercise sound judgment, be solutions-based, take responsibility and ownership of issues, including making difficult decisions and providing reasoning for your position.
