We are seeking established, inspiring and highly motivated leaders. As an Assistant Secretary in the Department of Education, you will be a key member of the senior leadership team and support the Executive in the provision of advice to Australian Government. You will provide leadership, management and strategic direction for your Branch and for the department. You will manage the development and implementation of major government and department initiatives, participate in departmental or whole of government forums and actively contribute to the corporate leadership of the department and to the building of high performing teams.
As an Assistant Secretary in Schools Group, you will provide leadership as a steward of a national education system, in which all young people thrive.
Duties and Responsibilities
To be a strong contender, you will be strategically focussed with demonstrated experience leading and delivering in a complex and sensitive environment, with outstanding stakeholder management and communication skills, including the ability to communicate with Ministers, Ministers’ Offices, senior education leaders and other government and non-government stakeholders.
You will ensure the department meets its legislative, regulatory and governance obligations and work effectively to respond to and manage emerging issues. You will have a strong collaborative and collegiate approach, and be a dynamic leader who inspires, empowers, and supports staff at all levels.
Specific responsibilities of the Assistant Secretary may include:
providing strategic policy advice on quality education service delivery.
complex program management of national initiatives and grants.
building a culture of integrity.
operating in a complex co-regulatory environment to deliver an assurance and compliance program.
engaging with stakeholders and states and territories.
managing a Branch of three to five teams and shaping that Branch’s culture and capability.
supporting the Executive in the provision of high-quality advice to the Australian Government.
supporting the Executive in the delivery of strong leadership, management and strategic direction setting for the department.
representing the Branch, Division and the department at inter-departmental and cross departmental initiatives, reviews and inquiries.

Eligibility
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department, you must be an Australian Citizen or, in limited circumstances, in the process of obtaining it.
Security Clearance - our successful candidate is required to hold, or have the ability to obtain, and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.
