Job Summary
Assistant Security Coordinator is a uniformed position that supports the Security Coordinator in leading the day-to-day departmental operations and supervising the on-duty security operations team in a 24/7 security operation. The Assistant Security Coordinator assists in ensuring operational targets are met, security services are delivered professionally, and customer service standards are maintained. They play a key role in resource deployment, facilitating effective communication, supporting decision-making, and managing operations as directed by the Security Coordinator. In the event of an absence in the Security Coordinator role, the Assistant Security Coordinator will be required to step in and fully assume those responsibilities for the duration of the shift.

Organizational Status
The Assistant Security Coordinator supports the Security Coordinator daily in overseeing overall operations, and provides leadership to teams of Patrol Officers during critical events and proceedings that take place on campus. In the event that the Security Coordinator is absent, the Assistant Security Coordinator steps in to fulfill that role.

Work Performed

Supervises, organizes and allocates the work of an assigned team of Patrol Officers on duty and during major events on campus that require dedicated oversight and security presence.
Assists the Security Coordinator to provide direction and guidance to , and helps to ensure operations are running according to policies/procedures.
Liaises with Security Coordinator and relevant stakeholders in the provision of special projects that support departmental objectives and improved problem solving. Actively solicits ideas and opinions from others to efficiently and effectively accomplish strategic objectives. Troubleshoots and investigates issues, and solicits multiple sources of advice prior to taking action when appropriate.
Communicates key objectives and tasks to front-line staff as directed by the Security Coordinator.
Leads by example and provides guidance through active participation in patrols and the daily assigned tasks and responsibilities carried out by patrol officers.
Assists in resource deployment, ensuring operational needs are met and service delivery aligns with departmental standards and the expectations of the UBC community.
Responds to critical incidents and high priority/sensitive tasks, taking a leadership role during situations and escalating issues to the Security Coordinator, or to appropriate campus partners or external stakeholders as needed.
Reviews incident reports and shift logs to identify issues or trends and provides feedback or recommendations to improve team performance.
Supports event operations by assisting with staff deployment, ensuring proper coverage, providing event-specific training, and supporting the execution of event plans.
Upholds departmental standards by supporting the adherence to uniform policies, maintaining cleanliness of vehicles and equipment, and promoting a professional image.
Supports team development through coaching and mentoring, encouraging professionalism, and promoting a collaborative environment.
Supports the delivery of first aid and safety services in accordance with Occupational First Aid Advanced certification, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
Works with patrol team to maintain equipment, ensuring functionality, addressing issues as they arise, and reporting or mitigating concerns in collaboration with the Security Coordinator or management.
Provides assistance, direction, and information to the UBC community and external partners while building and maintaining positive relationships.
Monitors and addresses unauthorized or suspicious activities to ensure campus safety; reports to management or external agencies as necessary.
Assists in maintaining compliance with institutional policies and protocols, escalating concerns as needed.
Promotes a safe and healthy working environment by implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, building trust to create a respectful environment.
Provides trauma-informed services in response to incidents, including conducting intake meetings, engaging in client interactions with sensitivity, and delivering support tailored to individual needs.
Performs the duties of the Security Coordinator when scheduling requires it.Acts as the primary point of contact for team members in the Security Coordinator’s absence, ensuring continuity in leadership and decision-making.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Assistant Security Coordinator is expected to make decisions with a collaborative and community-focused approach, with support from the coordinator. Makes planning related decisions for staffing, equipment, and other resources availability; inappropriate direction and utilization of staff may impact service and safety of people and buildings.

Supervision Received
The Assistant Security Coordinator reports to the Security Coordinator and plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operations. This position helps address situations where no established policy applies, and reinforces current polices with front line staff, with the guidance from the Security Coordinator or management team when necessary.

Supervision Given
The Assistant Security Coordinator oversees patrol teams on campus, leading from the front lines and supporting the team in daily operations and service delivery during major events on campus. The role emphasizes team development and upholding strong performance and professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduation, completion of BC Securities Services Act training requirements for obtaining a BC Security License, Advanced First Aid Certification (OFA 3), a valid BC Driver’s license, Advanced Security Training (AST), Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and a minimum three years of security industry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Minimum of 3-5 years security industry experience, with a minimum of 1 years in a supervisory capacity.
Completion of all UBC and Campus Security department issued training, i.e., Naloxone, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
Ability to work a rotating schedule, as assigned.
Experience supporting team management, ideally in a unionized setting.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with some supervisory and leadership experience.
Ability to use sound judgment and make decisions when needed
Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications

Post-secondary degree or certificate in a related field, or related training, plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Professional certification or membership related to the role (e.g., CPP/APP) is an asset but not required.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and trauma-informed approaches.
Ability to work with diverse groups in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.
Ability to effectively manage organizational resources.
Experience scheduling large groups in line with operational needs and the collective bargaining agreement.
Ability to effectively train, supervise and motivate employees.
Capable of analyzing problems, identifying key information, and assisting in resolving issues to ensure smooth operations and effective decision-making.
Enhances staff development and learning through coaching and mentorship. Contributes to planning and developing training initiatives, such as conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, emergency response protocols, and communication skills. Assists in creating training content and facilitates or delivers presentations during team training sessions.
