POSITION OVERVIEW
BDC is a Crown Corporation and the only bank devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs. It provides access to financing, capital, and advisory services to help Canadian businesses grow and succeed. For almost 80 years, BDC's purpose has been to support entrepreneurs in all industries and at all stages of growth.
BDC Capital is the investment arm of BDC, serving as a strategic partner to Canada’s most innovative and high-potential firms. With over $6 billion under management, BDC Capital offers a full spectrum of risk capital, from seed investments to flexible growth and transition capital to support Canadian entrepreneurs who wish to scale their businesses into global champions. More information can be found at bdc.ca/capital.
BDC Growth Equity Partners (GEP) is the growth equity and private equity division within BDC Capital that focuses on equity investments of a significant minority ownership stake in leading Canadian mid-market businesses. Since its formation in 2016, GEP has expanded to a national team of 1+ investment professionals managing a growing portfolio of 38 direct equity investments across a range of industries.
GEP recently launched its third investment fund of $300 million, bringing the total amount under management to almost $+00 million, all of which is aimed at empowering Canadian entrepreneurs to accelerate their growth strategies and scale into global champions.
With such increasing growth, GEP is seeking an Associate to join its team in Vancouver. The successful candidate will work in small transaction teams and gain significant knowledge and experience across numerous industries and deal structures, while being an active contributor to the success of the team and organization.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Here's what the challenges of a typical week look like:
Collaborate in the evaluation and assessment of new and follow-on investments including the process of sourcing and screening new investments, and taking a leadership role in direct and third-party due diligence, performing industry research and providing support to existing investee companies.
Conduct business plan reviews, manage communications with entrepreneurs, management teams, and financial advisors, and prepare initial investment thesis, memoranda and recommendations to pursue or decline investment opportunities.
Conduct research and analysis on markets, ecosystems, financial forecasts, management, competition, among others. This involves talking to competitors and clients, analyzing research reports, interviewing and gathering information from industry experts, working with technical consultants to evaluate business models and technologies, and building valuation models, financial forecasts, comparable and precedent transaction analyses, and sensitivity analyses.
Work closely with senior management of investee companies to support certain strategic and tactical initiatives at each investee company, including setting-up financial reporting and budgeting, KPIs, conducting market research, analyzing potential M&A opportunities and acting in a role as Board Observer in certain companies.
Provide internal portfolio management support by proactively monitoring performance, providing financial, forecasting and statistical analyses, identifying potential opportunities and risks, and working alongside senior management to develop governance and reporting.
Participate actively in the alignment, review and investment decisions for GEP nationally.
Assist in managing the deal pipeline and portfolio dashboard, producing quarterly/semi-annual reports, providing financial analysis on the overall portfolio and supporting the Partners and Managing Partner with internal presentations.
Take ownership of the deal submission process through BDC’s CRM and proprietary internal platform, including developing superior knowledge on BDC processes, procedures and directives.
Attend trade shows, investment conferences, and other events pertinent to business development to build a relevant network of contacts and increase market visibility of GEP nationally.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
With outstanding dynamism and integrity, the ideal candidate will be an integral part of the investment team and will provide support throughout the entire deal process, gaining direct exposure to sourcing and reviewing deals, completing due diligence, negotiating legal agreements, creating value through post-closing initiatives and collaboration with portfolio companies, and so much more.
