About The Role

The Growth mission at the New York Times works to accelerate our subscription business to secure our position as the most successful journalistic institution in the world.

As part of the Growth mission, the Meter Team focuses on our paywall subscription business. We build the suite of services responsible for managing access and metering content across the New York Times portfolio of products (including News, Cooking, the Athletic, Games and Wirecutter). Our service powers the access model that converts our readers into paying subscribers.

We are looking for a curious and collaborative Associate Software engineer to join the Meter team within the Growth mission. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the systems that power our subscription business, turning our readers into subscribers. As part of the Meter Team, you'll help build the next generation of our distributed access service.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Meter. You will be expected to come into the office at least two days per week.

Responsibilities
• Build reliable, secure and scalable distributed backend services using Go.
• Collaborate with product, data analysts and engineers to design and implement new access capabilities across the NYT portfolio of products.
• Participate in design and code reviews.
• Work limited on-call hours on the team. On call responsibilities are shared with other engineers on the team
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications
• 1 year of experience writing production-grade code in Go or another backend language including unit and integration tests
• 1 year of experience building secure, scalable, resilient and observable distributed systems on a cloud platform like AWS or GCP.
• 1 year of experience with version control systems like GitHub / GitLab
• 1 year of experience working with SQL
• 1 year of experience working collaboratively within a cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Javascript/TypeScript and frontend frameworks like React
• Experience using GenAI tools in your development workflow
• Experience operating production systems using Kubernetes

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$96,000 - $110,000 USD
