Our Health and Safety team provides a proactive partnering model for our university, and the role of Biological Safety Manager will support a critical function in our organisation.

The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

In this role, you will lead biological safety & compliance at AUT by providing expert guidance, oversight, and assurance for all activities involving biological materials, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other regulated biologicals across AUT.

Some key responsibilities are:

Act at the universities Nominated Delegate for the Transitional Facilities Operator
Lead the coordination and verification of AUT’s PC1/PC2 containment and transitional facilities and ensure compliance with Containment Facility Standards
Maintain and review containment manuals, SOPs, training records, compliance documentation, and inventories
Coordinate internal verification audits, track corrective actions, and support MPI inspections
Provide expert advice on biosafety policy, training, competency, and risk management
Build strong partnerships internally and externally with MPI, EPA, WorkSafe NZ, and internal stakeholders
Work closely with schools where physical containment facilities are operational

You will be an experienced biological safety expert coming from a lab technician or ideally a lab manager background and be used to supporting health and safety within areas of biological risk. You will also bring with you:

Experience working in biological containment laboratories
Strong knowledge of biosafety legislations, PC1/PC2 containment standards, and regulatory frameworks (HSNO, Biosecurity Act, EPA/MPI)
Experience in biosafety training, auditing, risk assessment, and document control
Experience with GMOs and MPI/EPA import/export or facility controls
Excellent communication, relationship-building and stakeholder management skills
Governance reporting experience
Demonstrated leadership experience
