Qualifications
MINIMAL FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Bachelor's Degree in a related study area, including laboratory analysis techniques.

Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with one years = directly-related experience.
- or -
High school completion with job-related options with a minimum of four years = directly-related experience.
EXPIERENCE:
12 months full-time in-person lab experience required.
Experience with various cell culture models (cell lines, primary cells), including human blood and intestinal tissue, is required.
Experience with clinic coordination including using Accuro for screening potential research participants, consenting participants in person and completing updates of human ethics protocols is required.
Experience with formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) sectioning and immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining of tissues is required.
Experience using Cytation 10 or similar automated confocal microscope for acquisition and data analysis is required.
Experience working in Containment Level 2 is required. Must demonstrate adherence to strict biosafety protocols.
Experience with data analysis and presentation using Graphpad Prism, Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel and Word is required.
Experience in phlebotomy would be an asset.
Experience with RNA isolation and RT-qPCR would be an asset.
Experience in lab organization, lab ordering and inventory management would be an asset.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent English oral and written communication skills are required.
Strong organizational skills, meticulousness, and accuracy are required.
Strong work ethic and troubleshooting through reading the literature are required.
Must be able to demonstrate interpersonal and teamwork skills but also work independently after training from Dr. Santer for specific techniques is required.
Must be well-organized with data management, typing up lab protocols and keeping up to date with lab notes are required.
Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and adapt protocols when needed is required.
Ability to complete projects within well-defined time limits are required.
A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have good eyesight.
Must have good manual dexterity.
Must be comfortable working with human blood or tissues from healthy or diseased or virus infected patients including be up to date on vaccines.
Must be willing to complete phlebotomy course for collection of human blood if not already trained.
Must be willing to approach potential participants in clinic to explain the research project clearly for informed consent after completing necessary privacy and ethics training.
Key responsibilities
A. Lab Responsibilities:
Culture and carry out experiments with cell lines and primary cells from human blood or tissues including routine mycoplasma contamination checks of cell lines
Screen (Accuro software) and in-person consent of research participants for human studies
Perform phlebotomy
Perform techniques including immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy
Perform molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA isolation, real-time quantitative PCR
Complete data analysis including statistics and create figures
Teach techniques to junior colleagues
Lab management/organization responsibilities:
Aid with some lab supply ordering
Management of Cytation 10 equipment for maintenance and training of new users
Maintain up-to-date inventory for fridges, freezers and benchtop
Maintain up-to-date inventory on Microsoft Teams for human samples collected through human ethics protocols
Contact sales representatives for quotations
Maintain and type up standard operating procedures and ethics amendments for the lab
Manage lab shipping/receiving
Monitors lab equipment
Communication responsibilities:
Communicate data to PI through weekly meetings
Prepare and present data at solo or joint lab meetings with standard software (Microsoft Powerpoint, Graphpad Prism)
Write up results for manuscripts in collaboration with Principal Investigator
May be required to preform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
