Boiler and Heating Technician

Our Physical Facilities department helps keep our campus running! We're looking for an experienced Boiler and Heating Technician to perform installation, modification, and repairs of all heating systems and equipment on campus. This position is also responsible for the preventive maintenance program.

Role and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical Systems, below are some key accountabilities:

Responsible for the detailed planning of a preventive maintenance program and predicting timing for necessary upgrades and/or replacement of major equipment/systems such as boilers, pumps, and associated control systems, and other components.
Develop safety standards for the Building Operators to ensure that work practices on this equipment are safe and efficient, and monitor the work to ensure that it is in accordance with the appropriate provincial codes.
Coordinate the necessary inspections with governing authorities to gain the appropriate certifications to operate the equipment.
Attend meetings and be available to provide technical support by way of inspections, preparing estimates, and developing scope of work for projects and renovations when required.
Prioritize work in cooperation with the Maintenance Leadhand. The work could include a variety of duties such as: providing preventative and demand maintenance on mechanical components like heat exchangers, expansion tanks, proper chemical treatment, boiler control adjustments, motor repair, pump repair, pump internals, mechanical or packing seals, couplings, bearings, checking and adjusting fuel/air mixture on boilers, etc.
Establish and maintain relationships with specialized suppliers and service providers related to the boiler and heating field, and be acquainted with the purchasing procedures to order equipment and parts as required.
Other related duties as required.
Qualification and Educational Requirements
Building Operator A or 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate or equivalent certificate of competency from the Boilers Branch
Alberta Type A Gas Fitter’s ticket
Consideration of applicants who have a Type B Gas Fitter ticket will be made with understanding that they are committed to pursuing the required education/certification to become Type A with Employer’s support and with required onsite supervision that will be provided.
5+ years’ work experience on all different types of manufactured boilers
Complete understanding of boiler and gas codes, rules and regulations
Ability to trouble-shoot and perform all job functions related to boiler repair
Experience with the detailed planning of a preventive maintenance program and predicting timing for necessary upgrades and/or replacement of major equipment/systems
Experience with inventory management and sourcing and ordering parts and supplies as required.
Ability to operate and update a computerized building management system.
Special Requirements
Due to the unpredictable nature of repair needs, this position may have to work weekends, nights, holidays or extended hours, especially during the winter months.
Employment Terms & Benefits
In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, salaried support staff position, subject to a 6 month probation period.
The annual salary for this position is $78,000, based on working 37.5 hours per week.
The successful candidate will have access to a range of benefits through Alberta Blue Cross and will be eligible to participate in our defined benefit pension plan.
An altered work schedule to allow for an additional day off every 2 weeks will be considered after completing the probation period.
