As part of the Building Consents Capability team, you will take a pivotal role in shaping and delivering technical training programmes that build the capability of our Building Consents workforce.


This specialist role focuses on technical training within the building and construction compliance field, requiring strong legislative and technical knowledge of the NZ Building Act, Building Code, Building Regulations, local compliance bylaws, and New Zealand building construction standards. You will develop and deliver training that builds BCA‑aligned technical capability across the Building Consents teams, ensuring staff have the expertise, skills, and qualifications needed to maintain BCA accreditation, meet Territorial Authority obligations, and consistently deliver high‑quality outcomes for Auckland.


You will work closely with operational teams, building surveyors, inspectors, processors, and subject matter experts to design and deliver training that supports consistent, high quality processing, inspection, and certification across the region. Your work will include developing training modules, Codes of Practice, e‑learning content, and fully immersive training programmes for new recruits, graduates, cadets, and experienced staff.


Key elements of the role include:


Developing and facilitating the Building Consents Training School to support new and existing staff
Analysing audit results, competency assessments, and staff feedback to identify training needs
Creating training plans and programmes tailored to technical and non‑technical audiences
Keeping training content current with legislative and regulatory changes
Monitoring quality control and performance indicators to ensure training effectiveness

You will join a collaborative, creative team with a national reputation for developing building control professionals and supporting excellence in building surveying practice.

You are an experienced Training Specialist with strong technical expertise in building surveying, building control, or the wider building industry, supported by a deep understanding of the legislation and standards that underpin building compliance in New Zealand. You bring extensive knowledge of the NZ Building Act, Building Code, Building Regulations, and associated compliance frameworks, along with a solid grounding in adult learning principles, education methods, and modern delivery tools and techniques; enabling you to translate complex technical requirements into effective, engaging training for a wide range of learners.


Some of the key role requirements we’ll be looking for are:


Strong facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, accessible learning
Proven ability to analyse competency assessments, audit findings, and performance data to identify training needs
Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to build trusted relationships across internal teams and with external partners
High levels of organisation, resilience, and the ability to manage multiple training programmes simultaneously
A tertiary qualification in learning and development and/or adult education preferable and/or a tertiary qualification in Building Consents Surveying or similar technical qualification
8+ years’ experience in training and development role/ environment, and/or 10+ years’ experience in the building industry or building consents field

As this role involves travel across the region, a full, clean New Zealand driver licence will also be required.
