What will you do?

Review Architectural, Structural, Geotechnical, Mechanical and Electrical drawings and specifications for Commercial building permit applications

Check applications for general compliance with the requirements of the Act, Regulations, Codes and Bylaws

Process applications for Assembly, Institutional, Residential (mulit-family), Office and Personal service, Mercantile and Industrial occupancies

Provide feedback to applicants regarding missing information and/or incorrect designs

Issue permits for new buildings, additions, renovations to existing buildings, interior and exterior alterations, demolitions, and temporary structures

Attend planning meetings

Answer project specific and general inquiries and provide interpretations regarding the Act, Code and other Regulations, for architects, engineers and the general public

Consult and liaise with other internal partners and external agencies

Review variance requests for alternative solutions to the requirements

Communicate with applicants to resolve issues related to a particular permit application and follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected

Accurately record permit data and correspondence

Prepare legal agreements for cranes and hoardings (crane swing path and overhead work)

Build relationships with builders, applicants, contractors, and other external stakeholders to enhance City reputation and service delivery

Qualifications:

Grade 12 and one of the following combinations of education and experience

Journeyman Carpenter Certification recognized in Alberta with a minimum of five (5) years of journeyman experience in the construction of commercial and residential buildings

OR

A two-year technology diploma in a related field or equivalent recognized in Canada and seven (7) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry after obtaining that diploma

OR

Engineering or Architecture degree recognized in Canada and five (5) years of relevant experience in the building construction industry, at least one (1) of which must be completed after obtaining that degree

Assets:

Building Safety Codes Officer in the Province of Alberta having completed “Residential”, “Part 9” and “Part 3” or equivalent (Group A Level 3) certification through the Safety Codes Council in the Province of Alberta

Skills required for success:

Demonstrated experience in the construction of buildings, including best practices and understanding of project scheduling

Experience and knowledge of standard methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the building construction trades with experience involving Residential, Part 9 and Part 3 projects

Ability to analyze, interpret and apply the Safety Codes Act, the Alberta Building Code, City Bylaws and related policies, procedures and regulations as they pertain to residential buildings

Capable of identifying non-compliant construction with Alberta Building Code standards and assessing structural stability for buildings and structures from plans or on-site inspection

Ability to understand and explain plans and designs from applicants, architects, and engineers, and effectively communicate information to various stakeholders through verbal and written means

Customer-oriented and skilled at conveying technical concepts in a simple and professional manner to address diverse customer needs

Efficiently handling multiple tasks, adapting to changing priorities, and working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Proficient in the use of a computer, tablet and smartphones for data entry, plan review, and communication with customers

Conditions of Employment:

Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position. There may be a cost associated with this requirement

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent)

You will be required to arrange your own transportation for use while on City business. Where appropriate, you will be reimbursed for expenses related to that travel in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. You will be required to obtain business auto insurance.

Work Environment:

Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Approximately May to September: 40 hours per week

Approximately September to April: 33.75 hours per week

Salary Range - Safety Codes Officer II:

40 hours per week: $45.798 - $57.554 (Hourly); $95,626.22 - $120,172.75 (Annually)

33.75 hours per week: $48.462 - $60.908 (Hourly); $85,377.93 - $107,304.67(Annually)

Salary Range - Safety Codes Officer I:

40 hours per week: $34.815 - $44.126 (Hourly); $72,693.72 - $94,667.83 (Annually)

33.75 hours per week: $36.842 - $45.339 (Hourly); $64,906.39 - $84,521.72 (Annually)
