Weekend Work Required: Yes (mandatory) initially yes, once staff training and running well, can possibly drop to 1 day on the weekend.
Role Overview
The Canteen Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the canteen, with a strong focus on weekend hockey matches, carnivals, and special events. This role ensures the canteen runs efficiently, profitably, and safely while delivering a high-quality food service experience to patrons.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Service
Oversee all canteen operations during weekends, hockey matches, and carnivals
Ensure efficient food preparation and service during peak periods
Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food safety, and hygiene
Handle customer enquiries and resolve issues promptly and professionally
Menu Planning
Set and manage kitchen menus for weekend hockey and carnivals
Adjust menus based on event size, expected attendance, and stock availability
Ensure menu offerings are practical, profitable, and aligned with customer demand
Consider dietary requirements and allergen management where applicable
Stock & Ordering
Order all food, beverage, and consumable stock
Monitor stock levels to avoid shortages or excessive waste
Manage supplier relationships and ensure cost-effective purchasing
Conduct regular stocktakes
Staffing & Rostering
Recruit, train, and supervise canteen staff and volunteers
Prepare and manage staff rosters, with a focus on weekend coverage
Ensure adequate staffing levels for busy events and carnivals
Provide clear direction and on-the-job support to staff
Administration & Compliance
Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and workplace health & safety requirements
Setting prices for menus
Report operational issues, equipment needs, or improvements to management/committee
Skills & Experience
Previous experience in food service, hospitality, or canteen management
Strong organisational and time-management skills
Experience with stock ordering and staff rostering
Ability to work under pressure during busy events
Good communication and leadership skills
Knowledge of food safety standards (Food Safety Certificate preferred)
Availability Requirements
Must be available to work weekends
Suggested hours: Monday ordering for following week (some hours) Friday 2.00 pm to 9.00 pm) Saturday 7.00 am to 2 pm, Sunday 9.00 am to 2.pm (but once running well, can you have Sundays off)
