Position Details
Transportation and Infrastructure - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
Provides a wide range of skilled, advanced, and finish carpentry work and services at the full journeyperson level on complex and detailed work requiring considerable knowledge of the carpentry trade. Performs alterations, renovations, repairs, inspections, and maintenance on government buildings using a variety of wood working machinery and tools in accordance with good trade practices, safety policies, and applicable codes. Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches and diagrams. May prepare sketches and drawings incidental to the work assigned. Uses diagnostic skills to assess job needs and suggest solutions. Prepares materials lists and obtains competitive quotes for tasks assigned. Provide cost estimates. Picks up and distributes materials. May supervise subordinate positions and exercise independent judgment depending on task assigned. Other related duties as assigned. Work is performed both inside and outside the site, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
Screening Criteria
• Journeyperson certificate in the carpentry trade from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• Carpentry experience in alterations, renovations, repairs, inspections, and maintenance of large buildings.
• Experience reading drawings and blueprints.
Assessment Criteria
• Knowledge of accepted carpentry trade methods, materials, and tools.
• Knowledge of accepted carpentry trade practices and codes.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices.
• Ability to problem solve and make independent decisions.
• Ability to assess and evaluate multiple issues and balance competing demands in a dynamic environment.
• Professionalism.
Conditions of Employment
Conditions of Offer
• Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license.
• Current driver’s abstract acceptable to the Employer.
• Journeyperson certification in carpentry.
• Criminal Records Check from local police satisfactory to the Employer may be required.
Conditions of Acceptance
• The demands of the job results in considerable fatigue, requiring periods of rest. Regularly required to lift or move objects up to and over 50 lbs., such as wood, gyproc, steel doors, and steel scaffolding, etc. Physical effort includes using hand tools that require accurate control and steadiness (to install, remove or replace equipment/systems); maintaining physical balance (working on ladders and scaffolding); and regularly standing, walking, climbing, using gross and fine motor skills, being in awkward or cramped positions and requiring need for strength and/or endurance.
• As travel throughout the Region is a requirement, driving occurs on a regular basis.
