Job Overview
We are seeking a Chemist to join our 3rd Shift/Nights (Monday - Friday: 8 pm - 4:30 am) plus one Sunday per month (end of month). The Chemist will perform scheduled analyses of chemical solutions using various techniques including but not limited to titration, electrochemistry, spectroscopy and spectrophotometry. The work will consist of following standard operating procedures, referring to technical and safety literature when needed, inputting and logging data and results into laboratory software, and providing information and assistance regarding your results to other team members. You will be in close communication with the shift’s production manager and provide them with recommendations for chemical additions based on your analytical results. Occasionally, you will need to troubleshoot solutions based on results, literature, and chemical intuition.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Several daily chemical analyses of chemical plating solutions in a timely and accurate manner.
Routine calibration of equipment, such as pH meters and various sensors.
Safely handle hazardous materials including but not limited to: concentrated acids and bases; metal salts including but not limited to nickel, cadmium, and chromium; titrants such as iodine, EDTA, thiosulfate, and silver nitrate.
Analyzing solutions via Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS), spectrophotometry (UV-VIS), titration, and other analytical chemical techniques.
Measuring and adjusting the pH or conductivity of solutions with electric probes and meters.
Recording and logging experimental results into digital logs, accurately and timely.
Occasionally measure out and add hazardous chemical solutions to heated plating tanks.
Accurately prepare chemical standards and reagents.
Calculate and recommend stoichiometric additions or dilutions to plating solutions per analytical results to meet the requirements of Alert’s quality assurance standards.
Quantitative preparation of diluted samples for spectroscopic analysis.
Troubleshooting plating solutions via qualitative Hull-Cell experiments.
Assist the lab director, production manager, and engineers with miscellaneous experiments and assignments on an as-needed basis.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, or related field.
Comfortable working with hazardous materials in a safe and efficient manner.
Previous experience working in a laboratory setting, such as a classroom or previous employment, performing quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Proficiency in using computer software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Able to confidently perform stoichiometric calculations to determine proper quantities for chemical additions and dilutions.
Experience working with chemical instruments, such as spectrometers and pH meters.
Experience obtaining accurate volume measurements using glass volumetric pipettes.
Experienced performing titration experiments.
Able to read and understand technical literature such as Technical Data Sheets, Safety Data Sheets, Methods and Procedures, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.
Experience and knowledge in ICP-OES, Flame AA, and UV-VIS spectroscopy or similar spectroscopic techniques.
Laboratory experience outside of a classroom, especially in an industrial setting. Experience within the metal plating industry is highly preferred.
Experience running and interpreting Hull Cell panel experiments.
Familiarity using TrueChem software or similar Laboratory Information Management Software.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions
Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to stand and walk frequently; lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 10 – 25 lbs.
Must be able to twist, lift, pinch, walk, bend, kneel and have finger, hand, and wrist dexterity for repetitive motion
Required to wear PPE (i.e. face, foot, eye, hand, and/or hearing protection)
Work Environment: The employee will work in a metal finishing environment and will be exposed to chemical fumes and vapors, loud noises, cold, heat, humidity, and dust.
