Job Description Position : Chief Manager – Medical Underwriting Incumbent Department : Operations Function Operations – Underwriting Reporting to : AVP - Underwriting Band 4B Location : Gurgaon Team size : 3 FTE + 1 outsourced resource KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Underwriting Management • Manage the retail life underwriting process and risk assessment activities in a continuously evolving environment, while ensuring optimum utilization of available resources. • Risk assessment and placement of profitable lives on the company books. • Preparing highly qualitative strategic notes for senior management as well as analytical decision making on changes to be implemented. • Evaluate emerging trends, competition practices, formulate options and propose recommendations on guideline to senior management. • Regular MIS for monitoring and analyzing the performance Compliance /Audits/ Policy Amendment • Supervise and review procedures and ensure for compliance in line with IRDA, Internal guidelines, reinsurance and ISO requirements. • Identify gaps and implement measures for gap resolution program. • Maintain acceptable audit ratings in all Compliance and Audit reviews. • Update and revert on underwriting requirements on proposed drafts and circular from IRDA or Life Insurance Council. • Monitoring of AML policy within underwriting process and review impact, and propose recommendations on guideline and in co-ordination with compliance team. • Continuous monitoring and traction of SIC; evaluate outages and follow-up on defect correction/ changes in system. • Ensuring the compliance to Process wellness program, QCC activity and COMS. • Assist in Internal /external audit and closure of audit reports and follow-up updation of all audits. Channel management • Align and strengthen relationships with the channel partner • Review and update guidelines for all channels and mange process roll out for revised guidelines, medical grids, questionnaires and formats • Involvement in customer query resolution with sales which may require direct contact with customer in HNI and sensitive cases. • Conduct regular interactions, training and evaluate feedback from sales, field operation and take necessary steps to enhance efficiency and quality. • Query management and management of contest closures with in defined TAT System enhancements and PAG • Manage and update Group Business underwriting guidelines /formats. • Working closely with functional management and relevant stakeholders and support growth opportunities / revenue enhancement initiatives on building new relationship, NPS, PMJJBY scheme, and digitization avenues etc. • Participate in group product development activities and develop an integrated approach towards identifying, and developing product features in conjunction with risk practices. • UAT management for Group system requirements and Implementation • Feedback to group team on plan specific underwriting requirements, product changes, wording of terms and conditions, formulating new HDF requirements Training and Quality Check ▪ Identification of training needs for department and ensuring the training by internal trainers, reinsurer, ops training team and MDP training. Measures of Success • Meeting the business forecast for retail and group production • Maintain the head count and quality in Underwriting department • Underwriting productivity, process and MIS management • Managing Underwriting guidelines, manuals and formats/ questionnaires • Compliance, AML policy and audit scores • Recruitment, retention % • Daily monitoring of productivity, quality, and maintaining TAT • Percentage improvement in Customer satisfaction score • Minimum Audit rating across all operational processes. • Max Life crude mortality rate • G2M2 attrition (unforced) % • Planning and content development of training programmes for Operations and field • Co- ordinate with Legal and Compliance in ensuring that AML policy Key Relationships (Internal /External) New Business, Field operation Group actuary team and Group ops PAG Compliance team Legal Ops training Key competencies/skills required Excellent strategic ability and analytical skills, Sound knowledge of the industry best practices, Excellent Verbal & Written Communication Skills, Multi-tasking capabilities with Eye for Detail. Excellent Business Writing and summarizing skills, Ability to maintain a high activity level, Strong analytical skill, Excellent strategic ability and analytical skills • Completion of UW certification for new Joinee and new business certification for underwriters at new business. • Putting up recommendation for revision of underwriting authority. • Ensuring the monthly quality check for underwritten cases and maintenance of departmental accuracy score. UWS and MIS and Analytics • Management of underwriting support process with in defined SLA • Communication letter standardization. • Ensure timely publishing of MIS and Dashboarding. Prepare dashboard for SLT distribution. • Optimum utilization of underwriting support vendors. Team management • Continuous monitoring of team performance, identification of training and development of team members. • Performance Feedback and review with the team. • Drive team engagement thereby impacting team satisfaction scores • Retention and develop back ups Ensuring customer satisfaction • Ensure the underwriting processing with in defined timelines • Track Customer feedback for continuous monitoring of CTA scores. • Ensure timely underwriting of proposals while adhering to the regulations Projects (Lead) • Medical grid cost optimization Green belt • Medical underwriting Automation: Desired qualification and experience • Graduate/Post Graduate preferably in Hospital Administration, MBBS, BSC (Hons) in Nursing , Pharmacy, Insurance qualified • 10 – 12 years of experience in Life Medical Underwriting or related areas. • Experience of working closely with IT for system enhancements and automation as Business User and contributing towards User Acceptance Testing for system releases.
