Chief Steward
Overview: Supervising the stewardship department. The Chief Steward directs, instructs, and assigns personnel performing such functions as preparing and serving meals. The Chief Steward oversees the cleanliness of the officers’ quarters and steward department areas. The Chief Steward may also requisition or purchase stores and equipment.
Key tasks & responsibilities
Reports to the master for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or instructed by the master.
In charge of the stewardship department
Ensuring that the staff meets the standard of cleanliness and sanitation required of a catering department
Inspects work areas such as galley, storerooms, etc
Ensuring that the stewardship staff has the proper training
Ensuring a proper follow up on the appraisals of the employee in his department
Ensuring the efficiency of his department and prevent waste
Ensuring control of the inventories related to his department
Ensuring that proper records are kept
Ensuring that the stewardship staff is instructed on and apply the MOHS regulations
Prerequisites
Be a Canadian citizen
Possess a valid Canadian passport with an expiry date over six (6) months from the time of joining
Possess a valid Transport Canada medical with a validity of six (6) months from the time of joining)
Possess the required certification for the position held as per the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and the Manila 2010 amendments for a vessel operating in unlimited waters
Obtain and hold an Enhanced Reliability security clearance. It is imperative to hold such security clearance as required by the Provision of Services contract between Federal Fleet Services and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, represented by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada.
