Job Description
AI and Automation Lead
Location: Hybrid WFH and office in Southbank, Melbourne
Type: Permanent, full time
Compensation: Hourly rate, plus 10% of company net savings delivered by automation.
Reports to: CEO
About Us
Meir is a premium wholesale bathroom and kitchen brand based in Melbourne. The CEO uses AI daily as a force multiplier across decision making, leadership development, financial analysis and operational management.
This role exists to design and build the AI infrastructure that supports the CEO and the wider business, then use that infrastructure to automate processes, remove repetitive manual work, and prove measurable value across departments.
The Role
You will work directly with the CEO to understand the business, assess where AI can remove friction, and build the systems from scratch that make it happen. The first phase is setting up the infrastructure by designing the data architecture, building knowledge systems and pipelines on a dedicated Mac Studio. The second phase is implementation by mapping business processes across departments, identifying automation opportunities, building them, and measuring the results. There is already a wishlist of automation ideas across the business; your job is to assess them, prioritise what is viable, and deliver.
The architecture comes from you. The context comes from the CEO.
Key Responsibilities
Sit with the CEO, extract workflows, data sources, decision patterns and pain points across the business.
Assess static and dynamic data including meeting transcripts, financial documents, brand materials, task management systems, ERP exports and more.
Determine what data is useful, what is noise, what is missing, and what format and structure it needs. Build the pipelines so information flows in correctly.
Design the right architecture, selecting the appropriate tools compatible with Claude Code and the business’ existing systems.
Build and configure the foundation on a dedicated Mac Studio with security, least privilege access, and data protection as non negotiable principles.
Document everything built so it can be maintained, scaled, or rebuilt without depending on you.
Map business processes across departments including finance, operations, sales, customer service and warehousing.
Identify where manual work, repetitive analysis, or broken handoffs can be automated or improved.
Build automations for both simple and complex tasks: transcript analysis, commitment tracking, financial data review, reporting, workflow management and more.
Work with department heads and staff to ensure adoption, not just delivery.
Measure and report on the commercial value of each automation, with validated savings tracked against forecasts.
Present recommendations with a clear understanding of downstream impacts, risks and costs.
Skills and Experience
Proven experience building AI knowledge systems, retrieval augmented generation pipelines, and data architectures in practice.
Strong knowledge of AI architecture: vector databases vs full text search, flat files vs structured storage, context window management at scale.
Proficiency with macOS, Python, SQLite, and data parsing.
Experience with Claude Code, Anthropic API, and equivalent tools.
Ability to map and document business processes, identify inefficiencies, and build practical solutions.
Ability to work directly with a non technical CEO and cross functional teams: listen, extract requirements, challenge assumptions and explain trade offs without jargon.
Experience with ERP systems (specifically MYOB Acumatica) is valuable but not mandatory.
Who You Are
You are passionate about AI and follow the latest developments daily.
You have built these systems before and know what works and what does not.
You assess situations to gain enough knowledge to recommend approaches, rather than jumping to solutions.
You care about whether people actually use what you build, not just whether it works technically.
You are honest about your own limitations and do not hide behind jargon.
You design for handover, not dependency. The goal is a system the business can operate without you if needed.
Why This Role Matters
This role builds the AI layer that allows the business to automate repetitive work, track commitments, and make faster, better informed decisions. It turns scattered knowledge, documents and conversations into a living system that grows smarter over time. And it goes further: taking that infrastructure into departments to prove real commercial value, not just technical capability.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Fixed term, Subcontract, Casual, Freelance, Temp to perm, Contract
Contract length: 6 months
Pay: $75.00 – $125.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 – 40.0 per week
Application Question(s):
How many AI business foundations have you specifically setup on a dedicated macOS using Claude Code?
If I gave you access to our business for a week before you touched anything, what would you spend that week doing?
Explain (without jargon) the difference between a vector database and full text search, and when you would use each. Do not copy and paste an answer from an LLM.
If I asked you to connect an AI agent to my ERP system to process customer orders, what questions would you ask me before you started?
What happens when the data you are feeding an AI system is messy, inconsistent, or incomplete? How do you handle that?
Compensation includes 10% of net validated savings from automations that you deliver. How would you identify and measure those savings?
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Southbank VIC 3006
