Join our dynamic team in Toronto, the capital of the province of Ontario, known as a dynamic metropolis with a core of soaring skyscrapers, surrounded by many green spaces, trails, and sports facilities. We look forward to welcoming one permanent full-time and three on-call cleaners who will provide cleaning and minor maintenance at the Toronto South Detention Centre. When working with inmate helpers, a shift premium will be added to every pay!
About the job
While working as a member of the large team at the Toronto South Detention Centre, every shift may be a bit different. In this role you can expect to:
Clean and maintain all areas of the institution, using handheld and industrial cleaning equipment
Use platform lifts as well as move office equipment and furniture to allow for cleaning
Lift and dispose garbage
Remove wax and finish floors
Replenish and submit requests for cleaning supplies
Unload supplies from trucks
Report defective equipment and maintain records and security of cleaning supplies
Supervise and instruct inmate helpers on cleaning tasks, and report on their conduct
What you bring to the team
Cleaning Knowledge and Experience
You have:
Experience cleaning within an institutional, commercial, or business setting
Knowledge of the proper use of industrial cleaning equipment, machines and materials (ie, floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, cleaning tools and products)
Experience with waste management and recycling practices
Knowledge of environmental cleaning practices and health and safety (including WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety Act) for safe handling of chemical solutions used for cleaning
The ability to comprehend and follow work policies and protocols
A basic comprehension of LEED building standards as it applies to cleaning practices (for more information on the LEED building standards, please visit the Canada Green Building Council website at www.cagbc.org)
Analytical and Problem Solving Skills
You can:
Establish daily cleaning priorities and identify shortages in supplies
Recognize the appropriate methods and materials for cleaning tasks
Recognize when equipment needs maintenance or repair, as well as report malfunctions
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
You can:
Identify and report security and workplace hazards
Supervise and instruct inmate helpers about the use and storage of cleaning products and equipment and report on their conduct
Maintain records of cleaning supplies
Alert staff and inmates of caution where cleaning is taking place
