Position Summary Alberta Canola is seeking a Communications & Events Coordinator to join our team on a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this role is responsible for executing communications initiatives and coordinating a wide range of in-person and virtual events.
The successful candidate will work closely with staff, directors, growers, government representatives, industry partners, and external vendors to ensure clear, consistent communications and high-quality event delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Communications
Create and edit content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X/Twitter), newsletters, websites, advertisements, reports, and press releases
Copyedit, proofread, and revise communications materials to ensure accuracy and consistency
Manage and update Alberta Canola websites, including Learn Canola, using content management systems
Coordinate the preparation and distribution of board materials for quarterly meetings
Collaborate with external designers on publications, mailouts, and branding initiatives
Monitor communications performance using analytics and prepare reports with recommendations
Support media relations activities, including drafting press releases and coordinating responses to inquiries
Maintain brand consistency across all communications channels
Support event-related communications, including invitations, programs, presentations, and promotional materials
Support internal communications to staff and directors as required
Stay informed of evolving communications best practices and recommend improvements
Event Planning
Plan, coordinate, execute, and evaluate Alberta Canola events, both in-person and virtual
Coordinate speakers, presenters, and program details, including travel arrangements and materials
Manage attendee inquiries and provide registration support for events
Coordinate event logistics, including guest lists, invitations, registrations, venues, catering, AV, signage, materials, and inventory
Develop and implement marketing campaigns to promote events and increase attendance
Capture or coordinate photography and content during events for communications use
Track event performance metrics, maintain event documentation, and prepare post-event reports with recommendations
Support sponsor, partner, and stakeholder coordination related to events
Manage event budgets and ensure effective use of resources
Provide logistical support for board meetings and governance activities
Identify and resolve logistical issues to ensure successful event delivery
Develop and maintain event planning procedures, protocols, and best practices
Support public engagement and outreach initiatives as needed
Other duties as assigned
Events may include, but are not limited to: conferences, annual general meetings, grower events, research events, board meetings, CrossRoads, and Stampede. Travel within Alberta will be required.
Requirements:
Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, event management, marketing, or a related field (equivalencies will be considered)
Minimum of two years’ experience in communications and/or event coordination
Experience managing projects with multiple timelines and stakeholders
Experience coordinating events, including logistics, vendor relations, and on-site execution
Experience managing budgets and tracking expenses
Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel within Alberta
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
Knowledge of Alberta’s agriculture industry, particularly the crop sector
Experience with graphic design, video editing, social media management, and website management.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365
Experience with WordPress or other content management systems
Experience using analytics tools to evaluate communications and event performance
Familiarity with event registration platforms or project management tools
Qualifications:
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Professional interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and a positive attitude
Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment when handling sensitive information
Comfortable interacting with diverse stakeholders including farmers, industry leaders, government officials, and media
Experience working with external vendors and service providers
