Position Summary: The Office of Multilingual Learners (OML) ensures that our Multilingual Leaners/English Language Learners (MLs/ELLs) receive the high-quality, rigorous learning opportunities and targeted support they need to thrive in college and careers. OML drives the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) focus on and support of its vast number of MLs/ELLs and creates professional development opportunities across New York City to help educators be educators of MLs/ELLs. Consistent with the NYCPS priorities, OML is committed to better serving culturally- and linguistically-diverse learners and promoting equity by:

Leading all ML/ELL initiatives system-wide, including the creation, development, deployment, implementation, and monitoring of ELL supports, resources, and services across districts, central offices, and schools;
Developing and implementing innovative programs and supports to ensure postsecondary success and welcoming school environments for every ML/ELL and immigrant student, including MLs/ELLs with disabilities, in temporary housing, with interrupted schooling, or who are newcomers or long-term ELLs;
Expanding parent choice with the creation of new Dual Language Bilingual Education and Transitional Bilingual Education programs to support MLs/ELLs in gaining language proficiency in English and their native language;
Promoting meaningful family and community engagement; and
Providing standards-aligned professional development opportunities for principals, teachers and staff to deepen their understanding of second language acquisition and literacy development.

The Communications and Implementation Coordinator will support this mission. This position will support office-wide communication and community engagement processes. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Works closely with the Executive Director of the Research, Instruction and Professional Learning Team, Executive Director of the Policy and Data Team, and the Executive Director of the Multilingual and Immigrant Student Support Team, as well as with other divisions across NYCPS and central and field offices

Responsibilities


Support office-wide internal and external communication and community engagement and continuously improve upon communication and outreach initiatives to families and relevant stakeholders about MLs/ELLs.
Coordinate responses and ensure timely resolution of escalations from community advocates, and others through the Multilingual Learners public-facing inbox.
Collaborate with staff to build strategic communications and outreach plans on key projects and initiatives, including leveraging social media to engage with the multilingual community.
Assist program leads on alignment with OML’s priorities, the Chancellor’s Commitments and compliance with State and Federal mandates.
Disseminate critical policy guidance around State and Federal mandates related to MLs/ELLs to schools through Principals' Digest, the NYCPS website, and District Offices.
Support OML with the development and maintenance of public and internal websites.
Support the family-facing policy guidance and materials to ensure that families of MLs/ELLs are current on the mandated services their children should receive as per CR Part 154.
Support the remediation of OML’s educator-facing content to comply with Local Law 26 and the Resolution Agreement reached with the Federal Office of Civil Rights to ensure that instructional and professional learning resources are accessible for persons with disabilities.
Support an office culture of inclusion, transparency, and collaboration.

Qualification Requirements:


Minimum


1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2. High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with education and non-education personnel, internal and external to NYCPS.

Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications.

Salary: $72,144 - $75,000

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
