McLeod Lake Indian Band (MLIB) is a progressive and growing First Nations community committed to the well-being of its members while supporting sustainable economic and cultural development. We manage a range of programs and services to enhance the quality of life for our community and are seeking a Communications Coordinator to support our internal and external communication efforts.

Position Overview

The Communications Coordinator will develop, implement, and manage MLIB’s communications strategies to ensure consistent, effective messaging across internal and external channels. This role promotes Band programs, services, and values to a wide range of audiences. The position is hybrid, with regular in-person work required in McLeod Lake and the option to work part-time from Prince George. The role reports to the Band Administrator and receives direction from the Communications Consultant.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and Implement Communication Strategies

Create and execute communication plans to promote MLIB programs, services, and strategic initiatives.

Draft a formal communications policy for Chief and Council review and approval.

Content Creation and Management

Write and design engaging content for newsletters, website, social media, and community notices.

Manage content updates through platforms such as WordPress.

Media Relations

Serve as the main media contact.

Write and distribute press releases and media advisories, and respond to inquiries.

Brand and Reputation Management

Ensure all communications align with MLIB branding and uphold its public image.

Monitor public perception and address issues proactively.

Internal Communications

Support staff and leadership communication efforts to ensure clarity and transparency.

Community Engagement

Communicate information effectively to community members and promote active participation in Band events and initiatives.

Event Support

Assist with event promotion, logistics, and communication support.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

Diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field is preferred.

Equivalent work experience will be considered.

Minimum 3 months of communications experience, ideally within a First Nations or community-based setting.

Technical Skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office and graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).

Experience using WordPress and content management systems.

Solid understanding of social media platforms and digital outreach.

Interpersonal Skills

Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.

Comfortable working collaboratively with staff, leadership, media, and community members.

Personal Attributes

Creative, adaptable, and culturally sensitive.

Able to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.

Respectful of Indigenous governance, values, and communication protocols.

Working Conditions and Location

This is a hybrid role based out of Prince George and McLeod Lake, with 3–4 in-office days per week in McLeod Lake.

Occasional travel may be required for community events, partner meetings, or training.

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly wage: $25–$32 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.

Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
