Job Description
The Community Nurse for an Indigenous Band provides comprehensive healthcare services, including primary care, health assessments, and healthcare navigation, while supporting and advocating for community members. This role emphasizes culturally sensitive care, integrating traditional healing practices and promoting overall health and wellness within the community.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Primary Care Services:
Provide primary care for minor injuries such as wounds, bruises, sprains, etc.
Perform regular checks of vital signs and health assessments.
Make recommendations based on assessments and respond to health needs within nursing capabilities.
Health Care Navigation:
Support community members in accessing, understanding, and navigating the health care system.
Book appointments with other health care professionals, including doctors and physiotherapists.
Facilitate referrals to specialized services as needed.
Advocacy and Follow-up:
Attend doctor days, sit in on visits, take notes, and follow up on care plans.
Advocate for community members to ensure they receive appropriate and timely care.
Transport community members to appointments to ensure they receive proper care.
Administrative Duties:
Ensure EMR records are up to date and accurate.
Perform charting using Electronic Medical Record software.
Conduct comprehensive health and wellness assessments.
Specialized Care and Support:
Assist with mental health and substance use treatment applications.
Community Engagement:
Engage with the community to promote health and wellness initiatives.
Provide education on preventative health measures and healthy lifestyle choices.
Collaborate with other health professionals to deliver holistic care to the community.
Indigenous Support:
Understand and respect indigenous cultural practices, traditions, and values in the delivery of healthcare.
Build trustful and respectful relationships with community members by acknowledging their unique cultural context.
Facilitate access to traditional healing practices and collaborate with indigenous healers and elders.
Promote culturally safe care environments and advocate for the integration of indigenous knowledge in healthcare planning and delivery.
Support the community in preserving and promoting traditional health practices alongside contemporary medical treatments.
Provide culturally sensitive education and resources to empower community members in managing their health.
Qualifications / Requirements:
Qualifications:
Registered Nurse (RN) with current licensure in the relevant jurisdiction.
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent
Minimum of 2-3 years of nursing experience, preferably in community health or with indigenous populations.
Requirements:
Current CPR and First Aid certification.
Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
Proficiency in using electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
Ability to undergo and pass a background check.
Skills:
Strong clinical skills in primary care, including wound care, vital sign monitoring, and health assessments.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build trustful relationships within the community.
Cultural competency and sensitivity towards Indigenous cultures, traditions, and health practices.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities, including appointment scheduling, charting, and follow-up care.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Problem-solving skills and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
Advocacy skills to support community members in navigating the healthcare system and accessing necessary resources.
