In addition, a network of 300 certified instructors who deliver lifesaving training to more than 70,000 Albertans each year—strengthening resilience and preparedness in communities across Alberta.

Position Summary

The Community Service Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, and administration of the Volunteer Medical First Responder Program and the Emergency Response Unit located in Calgary. This role ensures that programs are delivered efficiently, safely, and in alignment with organizational standards, while supporting a positive experience for volunteers, partners, and community stakeholders. The Coordinator plays a key role in positioning St. John Ambulance as a professional, reliable, and community-focused organization through the effective management and delivery of community services.

Working closely with the Centre’s Coordinating Team, as well as with both the Training and Community Programs & Volunteer Services Team at the Provincial Office, the Community Service Coordinator supports program operations, volunteer recruitment and engagement, deployment planning, and ongoing program evaluation. The role also contributes to continuous improvement by monitoring program effectiveness, supporting compliance with organizational policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and identifying opportunities to enhance service delivery and community impact.

Key Responsibilities

Coordinates the Volunteer Medical First Responder (MFR) Program and Emergency Response Unit (ERU) activities for the Centre– including volunteer recruitment, orientation, training schedules, equipment and supplies, administration, mentoring and motivating members and ensures required qualifications are obtained and maintained to meet required standards for event duty coverage.

Maintains ERU operational readiness to respond to local, provincial, or federal requests for assistance during times of declared emergencies and disasters which includes volunteers, equipment, supplies, and training readiness.

Is responsive to the guidance, directions and instructions of the Manager of Community Programs & Volunteer Services.

Works with the Provincial Office Management Team to support implementation of community service objectives, including marketing, fundraising, planning, budgeting, honors and awards, and scheduling of resources.

Works cooperatively as part of the Centre’s Coordinating Team in managing cross-team issues such as administration procedures, health and safety, use of facilities, etc.

Engages in on-going quality assurance internal audits of the Community Service programs responsible for, using the tools and instruments developed by the Community Programs & Volunteer Services Manager.

Develops and maintains close contact with consumers and clients of community services for the Centre and liaises with clients to sustain and enhance the public image of community service programs for the Alberta Council and facilitates the related cost-recovery and general donations for services provided, where applicable.

Coordinates the appropriate training and development of volunteers when required and ensures that members maintain standards of training, dress and deportment when representing St John Ambulance on public duties.

Work closely with the Therapy Dog Program Coordinator to support cross-program collaboration, where appropriate and as needed.

Reports conduct or performance concerns involving volunteer community service members to the Manager of Community Programs & Volunteer Services and provides recommendations as appropriate.

Supports and attends community relations activities, meetings, workshops, conferences, and special events related to the delivery of community services.

Maintains volunteer and event statistics and ensures volunteer records reflect accurate and current information.

Coordinates the deployment of volunteers and associated assets (including vehicles and uniforms) in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Participates in the Centre’s Health and Safety Committee.

Identifies and promptly reports hazards, unsafe conditions, incidents, injuries, and near misses in accordance with Alberta OHS legislation and organizational procedures.

Follows established emergency procedures and participates in safety training or drills as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned, consistent with the scope of the position.

Qualifications

Valid class 5 driver's license with a driving abstract acceptable to the organization.

Experience working with and coordinating volunteers for program duties.

Experience, training or post-secondary education in the field of volunteer management or equivalent.

Successful completion of a criminal record check acceptable to the organization.

Experience with and confidence in public speaking and delivering presentations.

Knowledge of emergency management principles.

Training in Incident Command Systems (ICS), an asset.

Knowledge of First Aid and related equipment and supplies.

Knowledge of health and safety principles.

Demonstrated skills in operating computer peripherals, records management using Microsoft products and familiarity with databases and report functions.

Operate organization owned or leased vehicles and other equipment
