Job Description
At State Library of Queensland, we preserve Queensland's stories so they can be discovered, shared and understood, now and into the future. From rare and fragile heritage materials to contemporary collections that reflect the lives of Queenslanders today, our work ensures that the State's cultural memory is protected and accessible for generations to come. Conservation is at the heart of this purpose.
We are seeking a passionate, skilled and qualified Conservation Technician to join our Preservation team and play a role in safeguarding Queensland's heritage collections.
In this technical role, you will be constructing archival mounts and storage systems for collections and participating in preventive activities. You will also support the Conservation team by maintaining equipment, inventory lists and carrying out supervised conservation tasks.
Your daily work will vary and depends strongly on the Conservation team's priorities to deliver preventive activities such as quarantine cleaning collections, mould remediation and disaster preparation. Other tasks include constructing housing systems for collections, operating our Valiani mount and box cutting machine or creatively hand constructing packaging solutions.
You will support the Conservation team by operating and maintaining specialised equipment, including laboratory instrumentation, guillotines, ultrasonic welders, heat edge welders, and the box making machine, ensuring our workplace health and safety requirements are met.
As your skills develop you will be entrusted to carry out basic stabilising treatments on collection material and prepare collections for exhibition. This includes completing documentation and conservation assessments under the supervision of Conservators and the Registrar.
Just as importantly, you will contribute to a culturally safe, respectful and positive work environment where the whole team feels supported to do their best work.
The role description will outline any qualifications, licences and specific requirements of the role. If you are interested in this job we encourage you to read the attached role description and talk to the contact officer.
Applications will remain current for a period of up to 12 months and may be considered for other vacancies (identical or similar).
