General Functions:
The Cultural Teacher leads the design, planning, and delivery of cultural programming across the Clare Swan Early Learning Center (CSELC), including both center-based and home-based services. This position develops and implements culturally responsive curriculum, provides direct classroom modeling and coaching for staff, and coordinates annual cultural events for children, families, and the community. Working in partnership with our people, the Cultural Teacher helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by preserving and sharing Alaska Native cultural traditions and supporting children's social-emotional development through culturally enriched learning experiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, implement, and evaluate a cultural enrichment curriculum aligned with Head Start standards and culturally responsive practices.
Deliver weekly cultural lessons in each classroom, modeling instructional strategies and integrating culturally relevant themes into daily activities.
Collaborate with staff to embed cultural practices, storytelling, and traditions into social-emotional learning and classroom routines.
Develop culturally responsive classroom materials, including visual aids, calming spaces, and Alaska-themed social stories to support children's emotional well-being.
Plan and lead cultural learning activities during family events, fostering cultural exchange and community connection.
Partner with elders and cultural representatives to ensure authenticity and alignment with community traditions in all programming.
Provide translation and communication support between Yup'ik (or other Alaska Native language) and English to make curriculum and program materials accessible to families.
Coordinate the annual cultural events calendar and integrate cultural activities across all CSELC programs.
Track and report on cultural program outcomes for grants and leadership, ensuring compliance with program requirements and standards.
Provide staff training and coaching on culturally responsive practices, building staff capacity to support children's social-emotional and cultural development.
Assist in classrooms as needed to maintain required ratios and model culturally enriched teaching practices.
Maintain confidentiality according to all state and federal regulations, policies, and procedures.
Perform all related duties as assigned to support the success of cultural programming at CSELC.
Job Specifications:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate in both English and Yup'ik or other Alaska Native language.
Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and time management abilities.
Proficiency with computers, including word processing, email communication, internet research, spreadsheets, and childcare management software.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in staff training and development, with focus on implementing exceptional customer service practices.
Ability to coach and collaborate effectively within a team environment, fostering positive relationships and promoting teamwork.
Knowledge and ability to facilitate and manage large-scale cultural programming projects, including planning, execution, and outcome reporting.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively across the organization and with external community partners.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
Minimum Core Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:
Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
Fluency in oral and written Yup'ik or other Alaska Native language.
Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Two (2) years of experience developing and delivering lesson plans, planning and facilitating program activities, or facilitating activities with children.
First Aid/CPR certification or must acquire within three (3) months of the date of hire.
Must provide copy of current Health Report.
Valid Alaska driver's license and insurable under CITC's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver's license for at least three years.
Ability to work evenings and weekends regularly.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching in Yup'ik or other Alaska Native language.
Bachelor's degree in Education, with experience in standards-based curriculum design and development.
Experience in a Head Start, Early Head Start, or Elementary Education program.
Current or former Head Start parents are encouraged to apply.
Physical Requirements:

Frequently be physically active without getting tired, including active play and activities.
The ability to be on your feet for long periods of time.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
Able to get up and down off the floor with ease, including kneeling, bending, squatting.
The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
Frequently exposed to bodily fluids.
Possible exposure to noise, and contaminants such as cleaning solvents.
Routinely exposed to outdoor conditions including inclement weather.
