We provide strategic direction and national leadership of Australia’s education system, and oversee the implementation of the government's plan to reform the education system in Australia.
We will deliver key Australian Government policies and programs to:

Improve education outcomes, particularly for those most at risk of falling behind;
Address teacher shortages;
Improve the quality, affordability and sustainability of the higher education sector; and
Focus on supporting improved outcomes for First Nations peoples.

About the 2026-26 Permanent and Temporary Section 26 Transfer Register
The Department of Education Permanent and Temporary Section 26 Transfer Register is open for ongoing APS employees to register their interest for a permanent and/or temporary section 26 transfer to the department.
The register enables the department to access suitable and experienced individuals for employment opportunities across a broad range of classifications and business areas at short notice.
You must be employed as an ongoing APS employee to apply.
You will only be contacted in the event a vacancy arises that matches your skills and experience.
Your application is not a guarantee that an offer of employment will be made.
Your application will remain active until 31 March 2026.
Applications are not carried over after this time, you will be required to submit a new application for the Permanent and Temporary Section 26 Transfer Register.

Eligibility
Employment at the Department of Education is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:
Citizenship: Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
Security Clearance: You must have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a level designated by the Department.
