A Lead Engineer will have extensive experience of many, varying engineering implementations, and through this has become an expert in an at least one area of engineering; acting as a "go to" reference across the organisation.
They may take functional (not resource management) oversight of engineering delivery for a department, continuously reviewing designs and quality and driving re-use.
They will play a role in improving engineering capability in their area through recruitment and development activities.
They take important design decisions and engineering approaches that can be disruptive within and outside of their department towards simplifying architecture, reducing technical debt and increasing flow.
