Primary objective

Provide strategic leadership in the management, maintenance and storage of environmental data, information technology and business

systems for the Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security (DEPWS). As the leader of the Environmental Data Branch (EDB),

you will collaborate and support processes across the department to ensure that data, technology and systems are consistent and optimise

data outcomes that meet stakeholder needs. The EDB comprises the Geospatial Services Unit and the Remote Sensing Unit.

Context statement

DEPWS is the NT’s lead agency in the collection, provision of and access to natural resource data, information and advice for government,

research institutions, industry and the public. DEPWS holds extensive data assets and is heavily dependent on data for expert decision

making, which helps underpin economic development. To deliver on these functions, DEPWS produces a diverse range of data and

information that must be trusted, curated, contemporary and readily accessible.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Lead and manage the EDB to provide strategic and expert advice across DEPWS on the management, curation, dissemination,

accessibility and use of departmental data.

2. Foster a client focussed service delivery culture incorporating stakeholder needs to ensure that business requirements are well

understood and solutions are effective and easy to use and comply with policies, guidelines and standards.

3. Provide advice and assistance to the Department of Corporate and Digital Development in the implementation of the DEPWS Data

Analytics Strategy, associated digital platform and transition into a data-centric agency.

4. Ensure data is accessible for public use through maintaining and updating relevant delivery platforms (e.g. NR Maps).

5. Identify innovative uses of technology to improve business operations, organisational efficiency and data accessibility.

6. Represent DEPWS on inter-agency committees and forums dealing with business systems and digital technology issues.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams and work independently to ensure business outcomes are achieved.

2. Proven track record in strategic management of business systems and data infrastructure across diverse environments.

3. High level collaborative and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with senior

management, external service providers and digital specialists.

4. Proven organisational and management skills to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.

5. Substantial program, project and resource management skills, including change management, with proven ability to lead staff and

service providers in the successful delivery of complex data or business intelligence projects.

6. Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated experience with business intelligence packages, tools and databases.

7. Demonstrated comprehensive experience with enterprise data management, including an understanding of challenges and directions

relating to data governance in a public sector environment.

Desirable

1. Degree or Post-Graduate qualifications in data analytics, GIS, remote sensing, Information Technology or a related field.

2. Knowledge of NT natural resources, legislation and associated management issues.
