Department Information

Established in 1990, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts is a pioneer of liberal arts education and research at the nexus of the technical and human sciences. The academic programs are internationally acclaimed as models for liberal arts education in a technological age. Founded with the principles of its namesake, former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr., the College of Liberal Arts believes in the power of transformative urban leadership that is rooted in courage, compassion, and human and social justice. The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts comprises Georgia Tech's ROTC units and six schools: Economics; History and Sociology; Literature, Media, and Communication; Modern Languages; Public Policy; and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs.

Job Summary

Plan and direct the financial planning, accounting and reporting functions within a college or a large, organizationally complex research or business unit in accordance with Institute financial policies. May include responsibility for research fund accounting functions. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing employee performance and providing feedback, and making pay recommendations. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: unit management, faculty and staff; research sponsors and auditors. This position typically will advise and counsel: unit management and faculty. This position will supervise: financial/administrative staff.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Develop, coordinate and manage unit financial and budgeting systems.

Job Duty 2 -
Manage training, development and staff supervision.

Job Duty 3 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Job Duty 4 -
Manage the maintenance of unit accounts and associated reporting processes.

Job Duty 5 -
Perform ongoing and ad hoc financial analyses and report results.

Job Duty 6 -
Oversee unit budget administration and coordination including budget related reporting.

Job Duty 7 -
Coordinate and facilitate audits of unit financial practices and records.

Job Duty 8 -
May provide financial management support for research projects.

Job Duty * -
Advise unit management regarding financial consequences of plans.

Job Duty 10 -
Investigate and resolve unit financial issues.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience
Ten years of job-related experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires advanced knowledge of accounting principles and practices, especially as applied within a university academic, research or business-related environment. This includes skills in management/supervision, budgeting, planning, communications, and customer service. Use of office and financial-related computer software and applications is required.

The Director of Financial Administration oversees the financial operation of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, including but not limited to state, foundation, department sales and services, and sponsored funding. This position develops and manages financial and budgeting processes, structures, and systems while maintaining a customer service and continuous improvement mindset. The Director of Financial Administration I monitors and reconciles all funding sources and produces ongoing and ad-hoc financial reports and analyses. An essential function of this position is to provide guidance on the financial implications of strategic and operational decisions. The Director of Financial Administration I resolves unit financial issues and facilitates audits of unit financial practices, transactions, and records. The Director of Financial Administration provides advice and counsel to college leadership and financial managers regarding budget administration, procurement, sponsored research administration, accounting, and reporting. This position requires advanced knowledge of Georgia Tech, State of Georgia, and federal financial and accounting regulations and compliance policies; extensive knowledge of financial, budgeting, and accounting functions; and experience with General Accepted Accounting Principles and Cost Accounting Standards.

The Director of Financial Administration position is a crucial strategic partner and contributor identify funding to support key initiatives that advance the College's global reputation as leader and innovator at the intersection of humanities, social sciences, and technology. This position reports to the College Administrative Officer, supervises the four financial staff in the dean's office, and provides guidance and support to financial staff embedded in units. The high-profile Director position interacts with a wide range of constituents on behalf of the College and supports the dean's office, six academic schools, one research center, one department, and three Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs. The position collaborates regularly with the Dean, the Dean's office staff, the college leadership team, staff, faculty, and students. This position also serves as the liaison with several centralized finance units at the Institute, such as Institute Budget Planning and Administration, Office of the Provost, Office of Development, Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Financial Aid, Office of Procurement and Business Services, Office of Grants and Contracts, Georgia Tech Foundation, and Georgia Tech Research Corporation.
