About the Role

Join our Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning team as a District Community Library Service Centre Assistant, supporting a network of welcoming, professional, and responsive libraries and service centres.

This is a fixed term part time role, ending on 21 June 2026. It is a district-wide role offering set hours and days, but your location will vary across our network—at Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston, in our Edge Connector Vehicle, and at our Lincoln, Leeston, and Darfield sites—based on where support is needed. You may also work at other Selwyn District Council sites, helping us provide consistent services to our communities.

As a front-facing team member, you'll work with people, technology, books, events, and programmes. You'll build rapport and promote our resources, supporting lifelong learning and discovery.

Our sites offer dynamic public library services, Council services (e.g. rates, dog registration), and government services (e.g. Inland Revenue). No two days are the same, and full training will be provided.

Welcoming and interacting with people from all ages and walks of life
Proactively engaging with visitors to maintain an atmosphere that feels safe and inclusive for all
Providing technology assistance and help with digital resources.
Assisting the community with Council and library services.
Helping people connect to central government and wider community services through the Heartlands initiative
Finding, recommending, and shelving books and helping to keep our collections looking great.
Hours: 22 hours per week - 8 hours on Thursdays & Fridays, 6 hours on Saturdays. Start/finish times may vary by location.

About You

You're flexible, reliable, and passionate about great customer service. You enjoy hosting diverse communities and making everyone feel welcome. You're a confident communicator, culturally competent, and able to connect with tamariki and rangatahi.

You take initiative, communicate clearly, and have strong digital skills. You understand the role of modern libraries in supporting communities and lifelong learning.

We believe that diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives makes us stronger. We are committed to creating a workplace that is inclusive and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.
