Job Description
Your key responsibilities will include:
Drilling & Blasting Operation Planning and Management
Lead drill and blast planning and scheduling in line with the short-range mine plan.
Prepare, verify, and approve drill and blast designs, including tie-up plans.
Lead cost-reduction and productivity improvement initiatives through new techniques, products, and optimization opportunities.
Drive continuous improvement in wall control blasting to support safe mining of steeper pit walls.
Provide technical expertise for the trial, implementation, and optimization of drill GPS technology.
Develop and implement safe work procedures, standards of practice, and operational quality control programs.
Operational Leadership, Technical Expertise & Team Development
Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching to direct reports, ensuring they are equipped with the right skills, resources, and engineering controls.
Motivate the Drill & Blast team to maximise production efficiency and reduce operational variability.
Promote a strong safety culture by actively participating in our safety programs and maintaining Zero Harm principles.
Ensure drills, blasting equipment, and emulsion plant operations follow industry standards and SOPs.
Participate in short- and long-range mining production planning discussions.
Reporting, Budgeting & Cross-Department Collaboration
Lead preparation of monthly drill and blast reports and assist in budget preparation and forecasting.
Oversee weekly drill and blast plans in coordination with senior mining engineers.
Monitor production reports to verify output quality, accuracy, and adherence to plan.
Communicate regularly and effectively with other departments to support integrated mine planning and operational success.
Attend and contribute actively to planning, safety, and production meetings
The ideal candidate will have:
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or equivalent.
Minimum 10 years of experience in hard-rock drilling and blasting operations.
Minimum 10 years of experience managing multi-pit mining environments and resource planning.
Minimum 5 years of experience with DTH rigs and RC grade-control drilling operations.
Common Core Certification & holder of all required blasting tickets.
Excellent written and spoken English.
Willingness to work on a rotational schedule of 6 weeks on/ 3 weeks off.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
Strong knowledge of mine design and planning software (preferably Gemcom GEMS).
Advanced proficiency in MS Office, including Access.
Expertise in drill pattern design, blast tie-ups, wall control blasting, and explosives management.
Strong capability in developing SOPs, quality control frameworks, and safety improvement programs.
Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop technical teams.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive, effective working relationships.
Proven ability to drive operational improvements and execute plans with high accountability.
