Emergency Medicine Senior Registrar Position
2027 RMO Training year

Palmerston North Hospital Emergency Department is actively looking for Senior Emergency Medicine trainees to join our team and so we are offering a dedicated Senior Registrar roster (6 or 12 month terms) with the following benefits:
No night shifts!
One non-clinical shift per week
1 in 3 weekends
Be a part of our established Fellowship examination programmes
Salary as per the relevant Collective Agreement. (Category C – Shift rosters)
This position is for a late ACEM TS3 or early/late TS4 ACEM trainee who would like an opportunity to develop your leadership, teaching and quality improvement skills.
We are an ACEM Tier 2 non-Major referral ED and TS4 ED site with accreditation for 24 months of training, the Paediatric Emergency Requirement (PER) and Regional, Rural and Remote (RRR) requirement

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – MidCentral District's Emergency Department is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 55,000 presentations per annum. It is a mixed ED and is Tier 2 accredited for 24 months of training under the revised Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) training programme. We are also a TS4 accredited ED. Our ED sees a large volume of trauma and high acuity paediatric and adult medical patient presentations. You can expect regular exposure to numerous critical procedures and a vast range of complex pathology. We are a close-knit team of FACEMs who are committed to the career development of our registrars and to providing a supportive training environment.
As one of our Emergency Medicine Senior Registrars, you will be placed on a dedicated Senior Registrar roster, alongside two other ED Senior Registrars. The role places a heavy emphasis on the TS4 learning objectives/requirements:
Leadership
Teaching
Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance (QI/QA)
You can expect a roster that replaces night shifts with dedicated clinical support time, intentional rostered days off to facilitate study and affords you greater clinical and non-clinical responsibilities to help achieve your TS4 learning objectives:
Clinical responsibilities:
Assist in the co-ordination and flow of the Emergency Department by providing clinical leadership in discrete clinical areas: Main Department, Resus, Paediatric Zone and our new Fast Track
Provision of bedside teaching and clinical supervision of your more junior colleagues
Help us introduce Senior Decision Makers earlier into the patient journey with our new Physician in Triage process
Non-clinical responsibilities:
Take an active role in delivering Emergency Department teaching every Thursday, help facilitate our local ED simulation programme and be involved in our regular procedural skill workshops
Chair the weekly RMO meeting and liaise with the ED SMO group at our weekly ED SMO meeting
Develop your QI/QA skills by co-ordinating/presenting M&M/Adverse Event meetings and engage with our local Director of Research to undertake audit and other research activities

There is plenty to do locally and with its central location it is also easy to get away and enjoy all the major attractions of the Lower North Island, including the ski fields of Ruapehu, the wineries of the Hawkes Bay and Martinborough, or the capital city of Wellington.

We have a Fellowship examination programme that is highly supported and delivered weekly, in addition to the teaching programme. There is an embedded mentoring programme and plentiful opportunities for involvement in clinical research and departmental non-clinical portfolios.

Ideal applicants will be ACEM trainees in late ACEM Training Stage 3 or early/late Training Stage 4. You must be eligible to register for General Scope with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
