The job description of an endoscopy technician typically includes the following responsibilities:
Preparing Patients: Before the procedure, the endoscopy technician prepares the patient for the endoscopic examination. This may involve explaining the procedure to the patient, obtaining the patient's consent, and ensuring that the patient has followed any pre-procedure instructions (such as fasting or taking certain medications).
Preparing Equipment and Supplies: The endoscopy technician is responsible for preparing the endoscope and other necessary equipment and supplies for the procedure. This may include cleaning and sterilizing the endoscope, assembling the endoscope and other equipment, and ensuring that all necessary instruments and supplies are available and in working order.
Assisting the Physician: During the procedure, the endoscopy technician assists the physician or endoscopist by handing them instruments, adjusting the position of the endoscope, and performing other tasks as needed. The technician must be familiar with the different types of endoscopes and their uses, as well as the various procedures that may be performed with an endoscope.
Monitoring the Patient: The endoscopy technician monitors the patient's vital signs and condition throughout the procedure, and alerts the physician if any abnormalities or complications arise. They must be prepared to respond quickly and appropriately to any emergencies that may occur during the procedure.
Post-procedure Care: After the procedure is completed, the endoscopy technician assists with post-procedure care, such as removing the endoscope, monitoring the patient as they recover from sedation, and providing any necessary post-procedure instructions to the patient.
Cleaning and Sterilizing Equipment: Once the procedure is complete, the endoscopy technician is responsible for cleaning and sterilizing the endoscope and other equipment, in accordance with hospital or clinic protocols and guidelines.
