Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
This position is for a senior level structural engineer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers
Applicants should ideally have experience with the static and dynamic analysis of steel structures and foundations, as well as naval shock and vibration analysis requirements as they relate to foundation design
Alternatively, applicants should have experience with the shock testing and qualification of shipboard equipment and components
Specifically, applicants should have experience with the capabilities of finite element analysis (FEA) computer applications, such as Femap, Nastran, Abaqus, Ansys, or Pro/Engineer, and with 3-D modeling and drafting programs, such as Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD
Alternatively, applicants should have experience with developing and reviewing shock test procedures, overseeing the performance of shock testing, developing and reviewing of written shock qualification documentation, and overseeing the technical and project management of multiple simultaneous shock qualification efforts
Applicants should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently with only minimal oversight from management, while successfully managing multiple complex projects simultaneously and mentoring junior staff

Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis
