Job Description
ACESGroup – Where Innovation Meets Security
At ACESGroup, we have always been a leader in combining operational expertise with cutting-edge technology. Our point of difference is clear: we do not just use technology: we build it.
Across every division, from frontline operations to corporate services, our bespoke software tools are transforming how we work, improving safety, efficiency, and decision-making in real time.
Our technology is not solely for internal use; it is proven, commercial-grade innovation trusted by clients and organisations across Australia and internationally.
ACESGroup is not a guard supply company with technology in the background, we are a technology innovation company with a high-tech guarding division.
We are shaping the future of the security industry by integrating people, systems, and smart technology to deliver safer, more connected environments.
At ACESGroup, innovation is part of how we speak, teach, and operate, and we are seeking team members who wish to develop and grow with us.
Role Overview
ACESGroup is seeking an Engineering Lead – Innovation & Platforms to help lead and manage our Innovations Team while remaining hands-on in the work.
This role is responsible for driving architecture, engineering standards, platform reliability and operational performance across the organisation. You will lead from the front by shaping technical direction, mentoring engineers, solving complex problems and contributing directly to implementation and delivery.
This is not a purely managerial role. We are looking for someone who is technically strong, practical and accountable — someone who will actively build, guide, troubleshoot and improve systems, not simply delegate work.
You will work closely with business and operational leaders to align technical outcomes with organisational priorities, while helping the Innovations Team deliver secure, scalable and practical solutions that perform in real-world environments.
This role is based at our Redfern National Services Support Centre, with one day work from home available after six months of employment.
Key Responsibilities
Hands-On Engineering Leadership
Lead and support the Innovations Team through active technical involvement and practical day-to-day guidance
Set technical direction while staying close to delivery, implementation and problem-solving
Contribute directly to architecture, solution design, troubleshooting and key engineering decisions
Lead by example as a hands-on technical leader who is willing to step in and help get the work done
Build a strong engineering culture focused on accountability, quality, delivery and continuous improvement
Architecture & Engineering Standards
Own and evolve system architecture across cloud platforms, integrations, data systems and field technology
Define and enforce engineering standards, design patterns and non-functional requirements including performance, reliability, security and cost efficiency
Guide technical direction across the team through design reviews, architecture decisions and practical governance
Ensure engineering decisions support both immediate delivery needs and long-term maintainability
Delivery, Mentorship & Team Development
Mentor engineers and developers within a capable and productive technical team
Support the team with complex problem-solving, implementation decisions and technical coaching
Help balance delivery speed with quality, supportability and operational stability
Lift team capability through hands-on leadership, clear direction and practical support
Encourage ownership, strong engineering discipline and effective collaboration across the team
Platforms, Infrastructure & Operations
Own and manage AWS infrastructure, including cost monitoring, optimisation and capacity planning
Implement and oversee security controls, access management and role-based permissions
Ensure effective monitoring, logging and alerting across production systems
Act as a senior escalation point for operational and production issues
Improve platform resilience, supportability and performance across critical systems and services
Core Systems, Integrations & Data
Take ownership of key internal platforms, integrations and APIs
Own and evolve the organisation’s data lake, data pipelines and reporting capability
Ensure data storage, schema design and ETL processes are efficient, reliable and fit for purpose
Support practical and maintainable integration between systems used across operational and business environments
Innovation & AI-Enabled Ways of Working
Help the Innovations Team identify and deliver practical technical improvements across the business
Champion the responsible use of AI tools to improve engineering productivity and operational efficiency
Guide the adoption of AI-assisted development practices in line with security, governance and business requirements
Support experimentation, learning and innovation that leads to measurable business and operational outcomes
Skills & Experience
Required
Senior engineering experience with responsibility for architecture, delivery and production systems
Demonstrated experience leading technical teams while remaining hands-on in design, implementation and problem-solving
Strong background in backend development, distributed systems and integrations
Hands-on experience managing AWS environments and cloud infrastructure
Strong understanding of security principles, access control and role-based permissions
Experience operating systems with real performance, reliability and support requirements
Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgement and attention to detail
Technical Skills
Backend development with Node.js, Python or similar
Strong experience with APIs, integrations, webhooks and event-driven systems
Experience with databases and data platforms including MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Athena and data lakes
Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation
Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration including Docker, ECS, EKS or Kubernetes
Strong understanding of logging, monitoring and alerting tools and practices
Desirable
Experience with biometric or identity-related systems
Exposure to reporting and data visualisation platforms
Experience supporting field-deployed or event-based technology
Experience introducing AI-assisted engineering practices
Experience working in fast-moving environments where practical delivery and operational performance are both critical
About You
You are a hands-on technical leader who is willing to get into the detail when needed
You lead by doing, not by directing from a distance
You are pragmatic, accountable and focused on outcomes
You are comfortable working across architecture, delivery and operations
You stay calm under pressure in live operational environments
You communicate clearly and work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
You know how to balance innovation, delivery speed, governance and reliability in a practical way
