Details: The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is the primary environmental regulator for the ACT. Our Mission is to protect and enhance the well-being of the environment and community as the ACT’s primary environmental regulator. Our Vision is a sustainable environment for future generations. The EPA is responsible for a range of environment protection issues including air and water quality, hazardous materials, waste, contaminated sites and environmental noise. We administer the Environment Protection Act 1997, Water Resources Act 2007, Clinical Waste Act 1990 and the Lakes Act 1976. The Environment Protection Team supports a range of functions to support the EPA’s legislative obligations including conducting investigations, responding to complaints, site inspections, issuing authorisations, taking regulatory action, and undertaking compliance audits and reporting.
The position undertakes frontline regulatory functions to support the prevention, investigation and resolution of pollution incidents and environmental complaints under legislation administered by the branch. The role is responsible for conducting environmental investigations, gathering and assessing evidence, and preparing statutory documents, reports and enforcement tools to achieve compliance and protect human health and the environment. The position carries out inspections of premises and activities, assesses applications for environmental approvals and licences, and provides technical advice on environmental protection and pollution control matters. In performing these duties, the role applies a risk‑based and proportionate regulatory approach, ensuring decisions and recommendations are evidence‑based, legally sound and consistent with legislative requirements and organisational policy. The position contributes to effective regulatory outcomes by engaging with regulated entities, stakeholders and the wider community, and by supporting enforcement, compliance and education activities aimed at preventing or minimising environmental harm.
You must be a team player with the ability to work independently to support your team environment and in responding to customer and stakeholder requests promptly. Key to the role, you must demonstrate the ability to manage competing priorities to provide decisions in line with applicable legislation and regulatory framework.
We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.
Eligibility/ Other Requirements:
Tertiary qualifications in environmental management or a related discipline, and/or equivalent relevant professional experience, are highly desirable.
Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in investigative practices, including environmental noise measurement and assessment, are also considered highly desirable.
Note: A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Opportunities for flexible working options could include hybrid working, being a combination of working from home, designated office based and FlexiSpace working locations across the ACT, part-time hours, job-sharing, flexible start, and finish times. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
How to Apply: Interested candidates are requested to submit:
An application of no more than two pages, with experience and examples related to the role with reference to the Selection Criteria in the Position Description.
A current curriculum vitae and the name and contact details of two referees.
Applications should be submitted .
Applicants should note that a Joint Selection Committee (JSC) established in accordance with the collective/enterprise agreement provisions will assess all applications for this position.
Note: Under the ACTPS employment framework you may be placed in another role where required for the efficient administration of the service.
