Sketching designs Fashion designers use their technical skills, such as sketching, sewing, pattern cutting, and making alterations, to create their designs. Selecting fabrics and trims Fashion designers choose materials that will work well for their designs. Overseeing the production process Fashion designers may create prototypes or models, instruct manufacturers, and manage production. They also give instructions on how to make the products they design. Fashion designers may specialize in one area, such as apparel, footwear, or accessories, based on their interests or skills.
