• Use excellent communication and customer service skills to provide information about access to the justice system, jail operations, and community resources (emergency housing, food, clothing, medical care).
• As a uniformed member of the MCSO team, you may be asked to respond to a variety of emergencies, intervene with members of the community who are in mental health crisis and/or address those who are being disruptive. MCSO provides conflict management training with a focus on communication and de-escalation techniques, in addition to defensive tools and techniques.

The successful candidate will
• Be able to multi-task and be flexible with interruptions to work flow.
• Work well under pressure, manage a high volume of foot traffic, and handle confrontive individuals.

Because the work of MCSO is 24/7, you will be scheduled to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays. In addition to regularly scheduled shifts, overtime may be required to ensure adequate staffing is available to maintain public safety in our facilities. After completing the trial service period, regular shift and day off assignments are determined by an annual seniority bid process.

Serving the Public, Even During Disasters

Every day, Multnomah County staff work together to serve as a safety net for our communities. During a disaster, this safety net becomes even more critical. All County employees have a role in serving the public during inclement weather, natural disaster, or other types of community emergency response. During these emergency responses, while typically there begins with a call for volunteers, county employees may ultimately be reassigned from their current position to a role in the emergency response in order to support the critical needs presented by our communities.
