Introduction

This is an opening for the 2024-2025 School Year.

Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community that, in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners. As such, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD.

LOCATION OF POSITION

This position will be primarily located at the Frederick Campus, but applicants must be willing to work at both the Frederick and Columbia Campuses.

Main Purpose of Job

To teach American Sign Language to MSD staff members and MSD students’ family members on both campuses through in person or virtual classes. Classes will be offered either during day time, after school, evenings and/or weekends.

POSITION DUTIES

Provide American Sign Language instruction of all levels to parents and family members of

MSD students. Develop appropriate lesson plans based on class participant’s needs. Provide

resources and materials to families to encourage ASL use in their homes. Include topics related

to Deaf Culture Awareness. Develop marketing materials, as appropriate.

Provide American Sign Language instruction to any MSD staff and bus drivers. Develop

appropriate lesson plans based on the class participant’s needs. A variety of courses should be

offered at various skill levels. Teach job related vocabulary in order to help the staff improve

communication with the students. Provide resources and materials to class participants that will

help them continue to develop their ASL skills. Include topics related to Deaf Culture

Awareness.

Serve as a resource to the community regarding American Sign Language & Deaf Culture

awareness. Emails should be maintained and responded to in a timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: Fluency in American Sign Language and written English required. Knowledge of the

Deaf culture, Deaf Education, students with additional disabilities and ability to teach students and

adults on different levels and with varying educational and language acquisition backgrounds is

required.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least three years of experience teaching American Sign Language of different levels.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)
