Financial Controller

Location: Liverpool, England

Category: Accountant Jobs

Full job description

About Us

We’re a fast-growing e-commerce brand with ambitious plans to scale. We’re looking for a Financial Controller who is more than just an accountant – we want a partner in growth. This role will start part-time, with the opportunity to grow into full-time as the business expands.

Role Overview

This is a Financial Controller role to begin with, as it’s our first time recruiting into finance. You’ll take ownership of all financial aspects of the business – from managing day-to-day accounting tasks (VAT returns, PAYE, payroll, reconciliations) to providing big-picture financial strategy.

You’ll work closely with the founders to identify opportunities, cut unnecessary costs, maximise profitability, and fuel growth. We’re looking for someone who can roll up their sleeves to keep the books clean, but also sit at the table as a strategic partner, helping us make better decisions through financial insights.

Our long-term goal is to build out a full finance department at MailBakes, with you at the helm. This role has a clear progression path, starting as Financial Controller and growing into Financial Director as the business and team expand.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all company finances, including cash flow, forecasting, budgeting, and reporting.

Manage PAYE, VAT returns, HMRC submissions, and compliance.

Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports.

Conduct detailed analysis of business performance to identify risks, savings, and growth opportunities.

Advise on cost-cutting, margin improvements, and sustainable growth strategies.

Support in applying for and managing business grants and funding opportunities.

Oversee payroll and staff hours management.

Partner with leadership on strategic decision-making for scaling.

Analyse e-commerce performance metrics, including CAC, ROAS, LTV, AOV, and marketing spend efficiency.

Provide insights and reporting using platforms like QuickBooks, and ideally Triple Whale.

Work closely with marketing and operations to align financial goals with business strategy.

Requirements

ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualified (or equivalent experience).

5+ years’ experience in finance/accounting, ideally with e-commerce/D2C brands.

Strong grasp of marketing metrics (CAC, ROAS, attribution, LTV).

Proven experience managing VAT, PAYE, payroll, and compliance in the UK.

Hands-on with financial software (Xero, QuickBooks, Excel/Google Sheets essential).

Experience with Triple Whale or other e-commerce analytics platforms (advantageous).

Commercial mindset – not just reporting numbers but driving business growth.

Strong communicator, team player, and proactive problem-solver.

Hours & Growth

Part-time role (flexible hours to start).

Opportunity to grow into full-time Director role as the business scales.

Why Join Us?

Be part of an ambitious, growing e-commerce brand.

Directly influence strategy and growth, not just manage the numbers.

Flexible working and growth opportunities as the business expands.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: £20.00-£38.00 per hour

Expected hours: 8 – 22 per week
