About the role:

The Document Examination Unit examines handwritten and/or signed documents for the comparison of handwriting text and signature formations. The Unit also examines handwritten documents, printed documents, printers, photocopiers, security identity documents and the examination of documents for indentations, alterations, obliterations, and erasures.

The position provides quality and timely casework assistance to the Document Examination Unit which includes both administrative and technical support.

Your duties will include:

Exhibit handling (including the use of the laboratory exhibit management database).
Case processing and preparation of case files for caseworkers.
Under direction and supervision from caseworkers, undertake evidence recovery adhering to established methodologies and procedures.
Perform instrument checks within the unit, including keeping records where necessary.
Perform a range of administrative tasks for the unit including but not limited to procurement, maintaining records (electronic and hard copy), database entry, preparation of in-house and national database submissions, casework and exhibit holdings auditing and responding to customer inquiries.
Present factual evidence in Courts of Law where required.
Solve routine problems using readily available information, where alternatives are limited.
Assist in prioritising tasks to achieve specified targets.
Perform work individually and as a member of a team.
As the successful applicant, you will have:

Ability to undertake scientific/technical examinations following established procedures.
Experience with the operation and maintenance of relevant scientific instrumentation.
Proven administrative skills including the maintenance of detailed and accurate records.
Well-developed oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on the ability to impart specialist knowledge and advice to internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work autonomously and/or in a team environment and to manage workloads in order to meet defined/agreed targets and deadlines.
Prepare reports and provide results on technical matters relevant to own work area.
An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct and the Organisational Values.
Requirements and relevant information:

A scientific or technical qualification is desirable.
A Victorian Drivers Licence and the ability to obtain a Victoria Police Approved Drivers Authority.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).
Ongoing Forensic Officer Level 2 position available.
Position is located at 31 Forensic drive Macleod, Victoria.
